The 2023 NFL season is just around the corner. Before then, however, teams must finalize their rosters, whittling them down from their offseason allowance of 90 players.
Unlike last season, when teams gradually trimmed their rosters from 85 to 80 and then to 53, there will only be one roster cut deadline this year: Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 4 p.m. ET, which has come and gone. That said, there will be plenty of cuts as clubs tweak their personnel and prepare for the final cutdown.

There was some hope the rookie cornerback could be ready to return earlier in August, but it appears he’s still working to get back on the field. Williams will now be required to sit out at least the first four games of the regular season.

- Colts release QB Colt McCoy CBS Sports JORDAN DAJANI AUG 28, 2023
- Cardinals’ Clayton Tune: Opportunity knocksRotowire AUG 28, 2023Tune and Joshua Dobbs are Arizona’s top options to start Week 1 versus the Commanders following the team’s release of Colt McCoy, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.Tune, a rookie fifth-round pick, may be likelier to open the season as Dobbs’ backup, though he has benefited from extensive preseason reps. McCoy’s release coincides with the news that Kyler Murray (knee) is expected to begin the regular season on the reserve/PUP list, meaning the Cardinals will need either Dobbs or Tune, if not a combination of the two, to hold down the fort under center for at least the first four weeks of the year. The team also has David Blough and Jeff Driskel (calf) on the roster, although further cuts could be forthcoming.
- Cardinals’ Joshua Dobbs: Week 1 job wide openRotowire AUG 28, 2023Dobbs faces a wide-open opportunity to earn the Week 1 starting job at Washington with Arizona having released Colt McCoy on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.Dobbs, who joined the Cardinals via a trade from Cleveland last Thursday, is the likeliest option to start with McCoy out of the picture and Kyler Murray (knee) expected to start the regular season on the reserve/PUP list. Rookie fifth-round pick Clayton Tune represents his top competition, and though Dobbs will only have a few weeks and zero preseason reps to acquaint himself with Arizona’s offense, he did play under offensive coordinator Drew Petzing last season in Cleveland. The Cardinals remain quiet regarding Murray’s expected return date, so the combination of Dobbs and Tune could remain atop the depth chart beyond the first month of the season.

- Cardinals’ Kyler Murray: In line to start season on PUP listRotowire AUG 28, 2023The Cardinals don’t plan to activate Murray (knee) from the active/PUP list to begin the regular season, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.Murray will officially switch to the reserve/PUP list at Tuesday’s 4:00 p.m. ET deadline, with Arizona having decided not to activate him before then. Any player who begins the 2023 regular season on the reserve/PUP list must miss at least the first four games, meaning Murray won’t be eligible to practice or play until Week 5 versus the Bengals, at the earliest. The decision isn’t surprising , given that Murray has yet to retake the practice field since suffering a torn right ACL on Dec. 12 of last season. Meanwhile, coach Jonathan Gannon has yet to name a starter for Week 1’s game against the Commanders. With Colt McCoy’s release, recent trade acquisition Joshua Dobbs is likely the favorite to open the regular season under center, though rookie fifth-round pick Clayton Tune has been heavily involved in preseason work.
