Eyes are on Paul George, LeBron James and more as NBA free agency gets going Sunday night

NBA free agency has arrived. LeBron James, Paul George and Klay Thompson are among the players expected to agree to new deals in the coming hours and days, and there will be plenty of other moves to keep an eye on. Free agents can negotiate with any team starting at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, and we should see a deluge of deals shortly after free agency opens. James Harden became the first star to agree to a new contract on Sunday as he reportedly re-upped with the Clippers on a two-year, $70 million contract.

Recent days have shaped what we should expect. James is expected to sign a new deal with the Lakers (who drafted his son in the second round days after hiring his former podcast cohost as their head coach). LeBron, however, could take a discount to give L.A. more money for other moves. All indications are Thompson is on his way out in Golden State. The Warriors legend helped the team win four championships across his 13 seasons, and Thompson is reportedly interested in joining the Lakers or Mavericks.

George, however, appears to be the biggest mystery in free agency. The All-Star forward did not come to a new agreement with the Clippers. The Warriors were interested in a sign-and-trade to acquire George, but did not get a deal done before he opted out of his contract. That leaves the 76ers and Magic as the two biggest George suitors outside of the Clippers, and he is expected to take meetings with all three teams.

Thunder making pitch to Hartenstein

The Oklahoma City Thunder have already added Alex Caruso to their young core this offseason. And now they could be looking to add a veteran big man. OKC is reportedly meeting with Isaiah Hartenstein, who is a free agent after breaking out with the Knicks last season. Hartenstein would help shore up rebounding for the Thunder, who struggled on the boards last season.

Brandon Ingram trade rumors

Brandon Ingram is one of the most intriguing names on the trade block. The Pelicans forward could be on the move after the team acquired Dejounte Murray from the Hawks over the weekend. The Sacramento Kings are reportedly interested in Ingram, who scored 20.8 points per game last season but struggled in a playoff loss against the Thunder with Zion Williamson sidelined.

Batum leaving Philly

The 76ers need to make plenty of moves to fill out their roster around Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in the coming days. One name that apparently won’t be on the roster? Nico Batum. The veteran Frenchman came over to the Sixers in the James Harden trade early last season and became a key piece of their rotation. However, The Athletic reports Batum will not be back with the 76ers.

Klay Thompson latest

Klay Thompson is leaving the Warriors. He could be leaving by a sign-and-trade. And it appears four teams are in the running to secure his services: The Lakers, Mavericks, Clippers and 76ers.

The Lakers could have more money to work with if LeBron James takes less than the max. The 76ers and Clippers are both at the front of the Paul George sweepstakes as well. And the Mavs have some room after trading Tim Hardaway Jr.

Latest on Klay Thompson

The Lakers and Mavericks appear to be the two most likely landing spots for Klay Thompson, who appears to be on his way out of Golden State after 13 years and four titles. He could be on the move as part of a sign-and-trade, per Adrian Wojnarowski:

James Harden staying with Clippers

James Harden is not going anywhere. Harden is set to sign a two-year, $70 million deal with the Clippers, who traded for the veteran guard last season from the 76ers. Harden was set to enter free agency, but all indications were he and the Clippers were looking for a deal to keep him in L.A.

The former NBA MVP averaged 16.6 points and 8.5 assists per game last season. The Clippers’ attention will now turn to Paul George, who is reportedly set to meet with the Magic and 76ers as he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

CP3 enters free agency

The Warriors, who were looking for a trade, have decided to waive veteran guard Chris Paul. CP3 was acquired by Golden State last offseason in a blockbuster that sent Jordan Poole to the Wizards. His lone season with the Dubs did not go all that well. He averaged 9.2 points and 6.8 assists per game in 58 contests and mostly came off the bench.

Paul turned 39 last month and will be entering his 20th NBA season.

Lakers trade rumor

An apparent name to watch in Lakers trade rumors? That would be Jerami Grant. The rebuilding Blazers would likely be happy to move the veteran forward, who scored 21 points per game and hit 40% of his 3-pointers last season. The Lakers are expected to be busy in the coming hours.

KCP on the move?

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is the kind of player contending teams crave: He’s a proven defender, consistently scores in double digits and can knock down 3-pointers. He’s won two championships with two different teams in the past five seasons. So could the Nuggets say goodbye to KCP? There’s a growing thought that the 31-year-old could be on the move. And Philly is seen as a potential landing spot. Here’s more: Nuggets prepared to lose Kentavious Caldwell-Pope; Sixers want both him and Paul George, per reportsJames Herbert

Setting stage for PG sweepstakes

Paul George is seemingly the biggest name to watch in free agency. He’s set to have meetings with the 76ers, Magic and Clippers and is looking for a four-year deal. Lakers make a move

No, they haven’t signed LeBron James to a new deal yet. But the Lakers did just hand out a Max contract. L.A. agreed to a four-year $32 million deal with guard Max Christie. A seldom-used 2022 draft pick, Christie will try to find his footing (and rotation spot) under JJ Redick. Here’s more from Sam Quinn: NBA free agency: Lakers re-sign Max Christie to four-year deal, per reportSam Quinn
