Dbacks notes

  • Diamondbacks’ Corbin Carroll: Crushing it early

Carroll went 2-or-4 with a home run, four RBI and two steals in Wednesday’s spring game against the Brewers.

Carroll smoked a grand slam as part of the Diamondbacks‘ six-run second inning. It was the second consecutive game with a home run for the outfielder. Carroll has spoken about adjustments he made to his bat positioning during setup, which appear to have worked for him. He tinkered with that adjustment during the second half of 2024, when Carroll posted a .919 OPS, and continued to work on it during the offseason.

  • Diamondbacks’ Jordan Montgomery: Another bullpen Friday

Montgomery (finger) threw 26 pitches in a bullpen session Tuesday and plans to throw another one Friday, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

If Montgomery comes out of Friday’s session without issue, the next step will be facing live hitters on the backfields before entering a game setting.

  • Diamondbacks’ Corbin Burnes: Throws two innings

Burnes allowed three hits and struck out three over two scoreless innings in Wednesday’s spring game against Milwaukee.

Burnes made his second Cactus League appearance and pushed his pitch count to 29 (20 strikes). He told Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports that other than a couple of breaking balls he left over the plate, he was pleased. The right-hander has struck out six over three innings thus far.

  • Diamondbacks’ Kyle Nelson: Falters in spring debut

Nelson (shoulder) retired two batters and was charged with two earned runs on three hits while striking out one in Tuesday’s 4-2 Cactus League loss to the Cubs.

Making his spring debut after he had been sidelined since last April while he recovered from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery, Nelson perhaps unsurprisingly struggled with his command. He served up home runs to two of the five batters he faced and was charged with a blown save after giving up a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. The southpaw possesses a spot on the Diamondbacks‘ 40-man roster, but since he has two minor-league options remaining, he could open the season at Triple-A Reno if the organization determines he needs more time to knock off some rust coming out of the spring.

  • Diamondbacks’ Bryce Jarvis: Cleared for spring debut

Jarvis (elbow) is expected to make his Cactus League debut in Wednesday’s game against the Brewers, Alex D’Agostino of SI.com reports.

Jarvis didn’t make any appearances after July 30 last year while recovering from an elbow sprain, but the 27-year-old righty doesn’t seem to be too far behind the Diamondbacks‘ other relievers in spring training. He’ll be competing for a multi-inning role out of the bullpen during camp after he turned in a 3.19 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 38:33 K:BB across 59.1 frames before spending the final two months of the 2024 campaign on the shelf.
