Dbacks Trades and Notes

  • Diamondbacks’ David Hagaman: Part of haul for Kelly

Hagaman was traded from the Rangers to the Diamondbacks on Thursday along with Kohl Drake and Mitch Bratt in exchange for Merrill Kelly, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Hagaman, a fourth-round pick last year, is the clear third piece in this deal behind Drake and Bratt. Hagaman didn’t pitch after getting drafted last year and missed the first two months this year recovering from internal brace procedure. He is old for the level, but the 22-year-old righty has a 3.52 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 16 strikeouts through 15.1 innings at Single-a.

  • Diamondbacks’ Mitch Bratt: Heading to Arizona

Bratt was traded from the Rangers to the Diamondbacks on Thursday along with Kohl Drake and David Hagaman in exchange for Merrill Kelly, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

A 22-year-old lefty with excellent control, Bratt has a 3.18 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 106:16 K:BB in 90.2 innings at Double-A this year. His 4.3 percent walk rate is the third best mark among qualified Double-A pitchers and while his fastball is a low-90s pitch, he has a full repertoire and could make it as a No. 3 or No. 4 starter.

  • Diamondbacks’ Kohl Drake: Shipped to Snakes

Drake was traded from the Rangers to the Diamondbacks on Thursday along with Mitch Bratt and David Hagaman in exchange for Merrill Kelly, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Drake and Bratt are both high-quality pitching prospects, with Drake recently getting promoted to Triple-A after logging a 2.44 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 70 strikeouts in 55.1 innings at Double-A. He has predictably been less successful thus far in the Pacific Coast League, where he has a 5.19 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 17 strikeouts in 17.1 innings through four appearances. Drake could be a factor in Arizona’s rotation next year.

  • Diamondbacks’ Tyler Locklear: Expected to get first look at 1B

The Diamondbacks plan to deploy Locklear as their primary starting first baseman after acquiring him in a trade with the Mariners on Wednesday, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM reports.

Pavin Smith (oblique) should return from the 10-day injured list sometime in August, but he could remain mostly at designated hitter while Locklear receives an opportunity to become the Diamondbacks’ long-term answer at first base. Locklear struggled during his cup of coffee in the majors last season but has slashed .316/.401/.542 with 19 home runs and 17 stolen bases in 434 plate appearances at Triple-A Tacoma this season.

  • Diamondbacks’ Geraldo Perdomo: Uneven performance in loss

Perdomo went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Wednesday’s 7-2 loss to the Tigers.

While the shortstop had a big day at the plate, highlighted by a solo shot off Tommy Kahnle in the ninth inning, Perdomo was fighting the ball in the field, committing two errors that added three unearned runs to Ryne Nelson’s ledger. Perdomo snapped an 0-for-16 skid with the performance, but he wraps up July with a .322/.431/.456 slash line on the month, along with two homers, two steals, 11 runs and a whopping 17 RBI in 25 games.
