Diamondbacks’ Lourdes Gurriel: Powers up in loss
Gurriel went 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI in Tuesday’s 10-5 extra-innings loss to the Padres.
Gurriel opened the scoring with a two-run blast in the first inning and repeated the feat in the eighth to tie the game at 5-5. He had gone over a month without a homer, batting a modest .235 (23-for-98) during his 24-game power drought. He also had just seven extra-base hits (six doubles, one triple) and eight RBI in that span. Gurriel is up to 14 homers, 56 RBI, 37 runs scored, eight stolen bases and a .249/.296/.412 slash line through 104 games this season.

Diamondbacks’ Ryne Nelson: Fine work in no-decision
Nelson allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over 5.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Padres on Tuesday.
Nelson has racked up a season-high eight strikeouts in each of his last two starts. Since the beginning of July, he’s made six starts, allowing 12 runs (nine earned) over 34 innings while posting a 30:9 K:BB in that span. That’s right in line with his 3.20 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 89:30 K:BB through 101.1 innings over 24 appearances (14 starts) this season. Nelson is tentatively projected for a road start versus the Rangers early next week.

Diamondbacks’ Adrian Del Castillo: Idle again Tuesday
Del Castillo isn’t in the lineup for Tuesday’s game versus San Diego.
Del Castillo will grab a seat on the bench for the third day in a row after going 8-for-36 (.222) with a .487 OPS through his first 10 MLB games this season. Lourdes Gurriel will take over as the Diamondbacks‘ designated hitter, allowing Jake McCarthy to start in left field.
