2026 Winter Olympics results: Alysa Liu wins figure skating gold, U.S. women’s hockey stuns Canada in OT

Day 13 at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics featured dramatic finishes in women’s hockey and figure skating — and gold medals for the United States.

In hockey, the U.S. topped Canada, 2-1, in overtime. Canada had a 1-0 lead for much of the game, but American captain Hilary Knight tied the score with just over two minutes left in regulation. Knight’s record-setting goal sent the game to the extra frame, and Megan Keller’s highlight reel goal capped off a dominant Olympic run for the Americans with a gold medal.

In the women’s figure skating free skate, two Americans — Alysa Liu and Amber Glenn — put forth outstanding efforts, and it was Liu who stood atop the podium. Liu entered the day in third place and dazzled with a score of 150.20 to vault herself onto the podium, ending a drought for American women in the individual event that dated back to 2006 (Sasha Cohen).

On top of that, Liu became the first American woman to take individual gold since Sarah Hughes in 2002. It’s a remarkable comeback story for Liu, who retired from competitive figure skating at the age of 16 before restarting her career.

Glenn started the day in 13th and sought redemption after a tough short program showing. She made an early statement by nailing her triple axel and putting together an almost faultless program until her final loop, when she had to catch herself with her hand. She didn’t fall, though, and turned in a phenomenal score of 147.52 to finish fifth.

Alysa Liu completes comeback with gold 🥇, Amber Glenn finishes in fifth

Alysa Liu has done it. The dynamic 20-year-old star delivered the United States its first individual women’s figure skating gold medal since 2002. Liu put together a phenomenal free skate program to vault herself from third place into first. Her score of 150.20 was enough to push her past Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto, who took silver in her last Olympics appearance, and 17-year-old Ami Nakai, who secured bronze after posting the highest short program score.

Though American Amber Glenn didn’t finish on the podium, she did secure a top-five spot in the free skate after a shaky short program. Here’s a look at the top 10 of the women’s individual figure skating event:

  1. Alysia Liu, United States of America (226.79) 🥇
  2. Kaori Sakamoto, Japan (224.90)🥈
  3. Ami Nakai, Japan (219.16)🥉
  4. Mone Chiba, Japan (217.88)
  5. Amber Glenn, United States of America (214.91)
  6. Adeliia Petrosian, Individual Neutral Athlete (214.53)
  7. Niina Petrokina, Estonia (210.82)
  8. Haein Lee, Republic of Korea (210.56)
  9. Anastasiia Gubanova, Georgia (209.99)
  10. Sofia Samodelkina, Kazakhstan (207.46)

Alysia Liu sets a new bar in women’s free skate

Alysa Liu is on the precipice of completing one of the best comeback stories at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Liu, who initially retired from competitive figure skating at the age of 16, put together an almost immaculate free skate routine to snag a score of 150.20 and secure a spot on the podium. Though her 226.79 composite score puts her in reach of a gold medal, Liu’s final standing isn’t set in stone. Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto and Ami Nakai, who finished second and first, respectively, in the short program, still have to go through their skates.

Still, Liu is guaranteed to capture at least a bronze medal. She’ll be the first American woman since Sasha Cohen at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics to a win an individual figure skating medal.

Isabeau Levito recovers from early fall to put bow on solid Olympic debut

United States figure skater Isabeau Levito fell early during her free skate routine, but she recovered to put a solid bow on her Olympic debut. The 18-year-old Levito finished the rest of her program without any major mistakes and posted a score of 131.96, which brought her composite mark to 202.80. That’s good for sixth place among the individual figure skaters.

That also means, with seven skaters still yet to take the ice, American Amber Glenn is still in first place. The last United States figure skater will be Alysa Liu, who finished third in the short program. Glenn and Liu are gunning to become the first American women to win an individual figure skating medal since 2006, when Sasha Cohen won silver.

With a gold medal on the line, the game enters a 3-on-3, 10-minute sprint where a goal wins it. If nobody scores, it turns into a shootout. Buckle up.
