Dbacks recap and news

  • Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte: Managing knee issue

Marte (personal) is returning to Arizona on Tuesday to undergo an MRI on his knee, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

The 32-year-old was placed on the restricted list Monday and didn’t report to Fenway for the series opener against the Red Sox due to a personal matter, but he’s apparently also dealing with a knee injury. Marte was considered day-to-day while tending to the personal issue, but a longer absence could be in store depending on what the MRI reveals.

  • Diamondbacks’ Jordan Lawlar: Hitless in return

Lawlar, who missed the last two months due to a hamstring injury, was activated ahead of Monday’s game. He’s expected to resume a role as the primary starter in center field.

  • Diamondbacks’ Jose Fernandez: Starts at hot corner

Fernandez started at third base and went 1-for-3 in Monday’s 11-1 loss to the Red Sox.

Fernandez was a late call-up after Arizona placed Ketel Marte (personal) on the restricted list. Without both Marte and Nolan Arenado (torso), the Diamondbacks got by with Ildemaro Vargas at second base and Fernandez at third. The length of Marte’s absence is unknown, but Arenado will try to play through his injury and could miss Tuesday’s game, per MLB.com.

  • Diamondbacks’ Ildemaro Vargas: Bounces back to 2B

Vargas got the call at second base after the Diamondbacks placed Ketel Marte (personal) on the restricted list. It’s unclear how much time Marte will need, but Vargas should step in while the situation plays out. Geraldo Perdomo, who recently took over at leadoff, took Marte’s cleanup spot while Vargas ascended to the top of the order.
