It’s going to be a busy weekend around the NFL, and that’s because cut day is here. During the preseason, NFL teams are allowed to carry 90 players on their roster, but every team has to get that number down to just 53 by the cut deadline at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday.

The NFL threw a slight curveball this year with the deadline: This will mark the first time in 22 years that cut day has been held on a Sunday. Between now and the deadline, a total of 1,184 players will be released, but that does not mean every single one of those players will be out of a job. Each team will be allowed to create a practice squad that consists of 16 players, and that number is allowed to hit 17 if a team adds an international player to their practice squad.

After getting cut, any player with less than four years of NFL experience will hit the waiver wire, where they can be claimed by another team. The waiver order is the same as the 2026 NFL Draft order, so the Raiders will have first dibs on claiming any player who goes on waivers. The deadline for claims is Monday at 1 p.m. ET.

On the other hand, any player with more than four years of experience will officially become a free agent after getting cut, so they won’t hit the waiver wire and they’ll be eligible to sign with any team.

Not only will there be hundreds of cuts this weekend, but there will likely be plenty of trades as well. Teams will always jump at the chance to trade a player that they were going to cut anyway so they can get some compensation in return. And teams looking to add a player will generally look to make a trade so they don’t have to deal with the waiver wire.

Former first-round pick to be released by Chiefs

If Kaiir Elam is going to save his NFL career, it’s not going to happen in Kansas City. The Chiefs are planning to release the former first-round pick, according to multiple reports.Elam signed with the Chiefs back in April and was looking to revived his career. He entered the NFL in 2022 when the Bills made him the 23rd overall pick in the draft. He ended up spending three seasons in Buffalo, but he ended up being a bust. In 2025, he played for both the Cowboys and Titans, but struggled in both spots.

At this point Elam’s best shot at making a roster this year will likely be as a depth piece at corner.

Browns might actually be keeping four quarterbacks: Dillon Gabriel appears to make the 53-man roster

The Browns currently have four quarterbacks on their roster in Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green.Teams almost never keep four quarterbacks so there has been some speculation that Cleveland might move on from Gabriel or Green, but right now, that doesn’t appear to be the case. According to ESPN, Gabriel has been told that he’s going to be on the 53-man roster, so he’ll be joining Watson and presumably Sanders, but who knows, the Browns have done crazy things before at QB, so let’s not completely rule out the possibility of them trying to trade Sanders.

And then there’s Green. The 2026 fifth-round pick is a raw talent, but he’s one of the most athletic quarterbacks in the NFL and you’d think the Browns would want to keep him around to try and develop them. As things stand now, it appears that the Browns will be keeping four quarterbacks, but that could certainly change.

Former Uber Eats driver makes Bengals’ 53-man roster

There are always some unique stories around the NFL when teams are putting together their final roster and the Bengals definitely have one with Dohnte Meyers. The first-year receiver has made the team and will be part of the Bengals’ initial 53-man roster, WLWT has reported.The 26-year-old Meyers is truly one of the best stories in the NFL this year:

  • He went to a D-II college (Delta State)
  • He worked for Uber Eats and Doordash to make money while training to make it in the NFL
  • He’s a former CFL player, who PAID $100 to attend a CFL tryout

He caught 65 passes for 1054 yards and eight touchdowns in 2025 and the Bengals took notice after that.

I went down to several Bengals’ training camp practices this year and Meyers was making big plays almost every time I saw him. He could be a surprise in Cincinnati this year.

Buccaneers inching closer to final 53 with 20 total cuts

After making an early wave of cuts on Saturday, the Buccaneers added to that total today, and so far, the Bucs have made a total of 20 cuts.Here’s a look at the full list (via Fox Sports)

As we mentioned earlier today, undrafted free agent Jalon Daniels won the backup QB job, which is why you see two quarterbacks on the cut list. Daniels will be officially be holding the clipboard for Baker Mayfield with Jake Browning out.

Bengals have made multiple cuts: QB Josh Johnson released along with two receivers

After 5.5 months in Cincinnati, the Bengals are done with Josh Johnson. The veteran QB has been release, according to ESPN. Johnson is the NFL’s ultimate journeyman QB: He’s played for 14 teams in his career, which is an NFL record, and now that he’s a free agent, he could potentially add to that mark this season .The Bengals have made several other cuts today and two of those have come from a very crowded wide receiver room.

In other Bengals’ news, Landon Robinson has made the roster, according to WLWT’s Charlie Clifford. Robinson was a seventh-round pick this year out of Navy and his family is definitely going to be thrilled that he made the team because they’re lifelong Bengals fans.

Dolphins and Packers make a trade: Miami might finally have a backup QB

The Dolphins currently don’t have a backup quarterback on their roster, but they do now after pulling off a trade with the Packers for Kyle McCord.Here are the details of the deal (via ESPN):
