Arizona State’s first home game in nearly a month turned into a nightmares Saturday night as the Sun Devils were throttled 55 to 19 by Baylor at Mountain American Stadium.
ASU (2-2 1-1 in Big 12) fell behind 21-3 less than a minute into the second quarter never recovered. The Sun Devils briefly cut the deficit to 21-13 on QB Cutter Boley’s 30-yard touchdown pass till Marion Miller late in the first half but Baylor marched 77 yards on the opening drive of the third quarter to make it 31 – 13 and the route was on.
Sun Devils Boley finished 25-43 for 340 yards with a touchdown and interception, but much of the yardage came in the game out of reach. He was sacked three times behind a porous offensive line and the Sun Devils was managed 99 yards on 30 attempts.
Reed Harris continue his stand out season with seven catches for 125 yards— he leas the Big 12 at 125 receiving yards per game. Miller bounced back from an early fumble with five catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. Kicker Carson Smith was perfect on four field goals attempts including a 46 yard season long.
ASU turned them all over three times and converted just four of 15 third downs, while Baylor’s DJ Lagway through for 306 yards and four touchdowns and the Bears piled up 564 yards of total offense.
“It marked just the third time home loss for the Sun Devils in their last 15 games at Mountain American Stadium.” from AP Wire Copy ASU head coach Kenny Dillingham had worn early in this week that Baylor was a play away for being unbeaten: “If they reached the ball four more inches this is a top 25 team coming into town” Saturday night proved him right
“It was an atrocious game and we can either point the finger at who was wrong, or we can all take extreme ownership and try to fix it,” Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham said. “I think it was more the fundamentals. We didn’t do very well, and that starts and ends with me.”
Baylor: Since losing its season opener by a point to Auburn in Atlanta, the Bears have won four straight and will get a week off before going back into Big 12 action.
Arizona State: Looked rusty after beating Kansas in London two weeks ago, then were never in the contest in the second half. A home non-conference gives the Sun Devils a chance for a reset before resuming conference play in two weeks at Texas Tech.
The Sun Devils will host Hawaii next Saturday October 10th at 7:30 p.m. AZT on Fox Sports 1.
