  • Dillingham hands play-calling back to Arroyo

TEMPE, Arizona  Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham is handling play-calling duties back to offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo, making the change after Saturday’s 55 -19 loss to Baylor.

Dillingham had taken over the play-calling duties earlier this season. The Sun Devils (2-2, 1-1 Big 12)  have lost two straight heading into Saturday night home game against Hawaii at 7:30 about Standard Time

  • Cardinals sign Jedrick Wills to bolster battered O-line

TEMPE, Arizona —The  Arizona Cardinals signed former first round tackle Jedrick Wills off the Buffalo Bills practice squad on Tuesday, adding depth to an  offensive line hit hard by injuries.

Willis, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2020 draft, started at left tackle for the Cleveland Browns from 2020 to 2022.  Knee injuries limited him to 13 games across 2023 to 2024 and he sat out 2025 rehabbing before landing on buffalo practice squad.

The move comes with the Arizona (1-3)  down  starting left tackle Paris Johnson Jr,  who is out for the season with a torn biceps.  Rookie Jayden Williams is expected to start at left tackle.

The Cardinals host the Lions on Sunday at 1:25 Mountain Standard Time at State Farm Stadium.

  • Matthew Tkachuk lifts Panthers past Kings, Brad Marchand injured

LOS ANGELES (AP) Matthew Tkachuk scored in the third period to give the Florida Panthers a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night despite losing Brad Marchand to a left leg injury.

Marchand was hurt after taking a stick to the face from Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke with 52.6 seconds remaining. The high-stick caused Marchand to twist around and collide with the right post before his left leg bent back in an awkward way.

Sam Bennett found a trailing Tkachuk in the left circle with 8:40 remaining to settle things in regulation after their first three games of the season all went to overtime. Bennett had an assist for the third straight game, and Tkachuk has two goals and an assist in the same span.

Seth Jones also scored and Jacob Markstrom made 19 saves for Florida.

Alex Laferriere scored, Darcy Kuemper made 26 saves, and the Kings dropped their home opener to remain winless through three games.

Despite being on the back foot for most of the first period, the Kings took a lead into the first intermission when Laferriere put in Erik Haula’s cross-slot pass with a minute remaining.

The Panthers responded by killing an extended power play, including 1:21 at five-on-three, before Jones tied it up at 3:49 of the second period seconds after getting back to even strength.

Panthers: Host the Minnesota Wild on Saturday.

Kings: At the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday.

I’m giving this play out on the Early Edge Tuesday and want to put it in before the line goes up. Florida lost the first two games of the road trip to San Jose and Anaheim, both by one goal in overtime. They should get back on track against a Kings squad that has allowed 13 goals in their first two games. I have L.A. missing the playoffs this season and think Florida’s physical style will be too much for them here. Back the Panthers up to -135.

With Brady Tkachuk joining his brother Matthew, Brad Marchand, Sam Bennett, and Sam Reinhart in Florida’s top six, the Panthers now have a forechecking presence to help offset Aleksander Barkov’s absence. The Kings are struggling to adjust to Peter Laviolette’s system—they’ve allowed 13 goals in their first two games and are still missing Kevin Fiala (528 points in 707 games). The Panthers have started the season with three consecutive overtime games, but at least they don’t have to travel far after just playing Anaheim. This matchup favors Florida, as the Kings aren’t nearly as fast as the Ducks. My power ratings have the Panthers well ahead of L.A., and I expect them to spoil the Kings’ home opener before heading back home themselves.

  • Golden Knights crush Kraken 6-2 behind Tomas Hertl, Jack Eichel

SEATTLE (AP) Victor Olofsson and Tomas Hertl scored two goals apiece and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Seattle Kraken 6-2 on Tuesday night.

Mark Stone had a goal and an assist to become the third Vegas player to reach 400 points with the team. Jack Eichel scored a goal and had three assists for the Knights, who were up 5-0 after two periods. Hertl had two assists.

Shane Wright and Jared McCann scored third-period goals for the Kraken. Kaapo Kakko assisted on both goals.

Olofsson ripped a shot from just inside the blue line on the right wing side to open the scoring with 6:58 left in the first period. He made it 4-0 with 6:53 remaining in the second.

Hertl scored a power-play goal with 4:02 left in the first period to make it 2-0, with Stone getting the primary assist.

With Vegas short-handed early in the second period, Seattle’s Brandon Montour broke his stick on a hard shot from the blue line. Eichel picked up the loose puck, crossing it to Stone coming down the left side. Stone drilled it into the back right corner past Kraken goalie Joey Daccord at 1:43.

Stone joined Jonathan Marchessault (417, now with Nashville) and current teammate William Karlsson (403) with 400 points for Vegas.

Carter Hart made 25 saves for the Golden Knights.

Daccord had 16 saves in two periods for Seattle, then was replaced by Philipp Grubauer at the start of the third. Grubauer made six saves.

The third period got chippy. Seattle’s Ben Meyers drove Olofsson hard into the boards and was given a five-minute major and game misconduct. Montour and Stone got into a fight, with Montour also being given a misconduct. The Kraken’s Ryan Winterton and Vegas’ Marc Gatcomb dropped the gloves with 4:57 left.

The Kraken begin a five game road trip on Friday at Detroit.

Las Vegas returns home to face Toronto on Thursday.

  • Nick Schmaltz’s NHL-leading 5th goal lifts Mammoth past Devils 5-3

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Nick Schmaltz scored his NHL-best fifth goal of the season, and the Utah Mammoth relied on their proficient power play to beat the New Jersey Devils 5-3 on Tuesday night.

Clayton Keller, MacKenzie Weegar, Lawson Crouse and Vincent Trocheck also scored for the Mammoth, and Mikhail Sergachev had three assists to surpass 300 for his career before leaving the game when he took a puck to the back of the helmet late in the second period.

Utah went 2 for 4 on the power play and has scored on 8 of 13 opportunities this season with the man advantage, including Keller’s goal in the first period and Schmaltz’s go-ahead tally midway through the second that made it 3-2.

Luke Evangelista scored twice for New Jersey and Jesper Boqvist had the other goal.

The Mammoth beat the Devils for the first time, having gone 0-4 in the franchise’s previous two seasons.

Karel Vejmelka stopped 30 shots for Utah, and New Jersey’s Jake Allen made 26 saves.

Sergachev reached 300 assists with his second of the game, on Weegar’s goal early in the second period. The 28-year-old Russian defenseman reached the milestone in his 634th NHL game.

He also assisted on Schmaltz’s goal for his seventh career four-assist game and fourth in his last 32 contests.

Schmaltz had two assists, the second on Trocheck’s goal that made it 5-3 with 3:08 remaining.

New Jersey defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler left with an injury early in the third period.

    Mammoth: At Boston on Thursday.

    Devils: Host Vancouver on Saturday.

  • Padres edge Brewers in Game 3 to stay alive in NLDS

SAN DIEGO (AP) Jake Cronenworth hit a tiebreaking homer, Game 2 starter Michael King pitched the final two innings on one day of rest and the San Diego Padres avoided playoff elimination with a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 3 of their NL Division Series on Tuesday night.

Xander Bogaerts turned a game-ending double play at shortstop for the Padres, who trimmed Milwaukee’s lead in the best-of-five series to 2-1 with a tense, back-and-forth victory over the MLB-best Brewers.

Game 4 is Wednesday night at Petco Park. If necessary, Game 5 will be back in Milwaukee on Friday.

Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado drove in early runs for the Padres, but their bullpen didn’t have star closer Mason Miller, who went on the paternity list about 45 minutes before the first pitch. King stepped up after pitching five innings just two days ago and finished it off – but only after a thrilling ninth.

King retired four of his first five batters, but William Contreras and Brice Turang drew one-out walks in the ninth. Christian Yelich then cracked a 107 mph line drive up the middle, but Bogaerts went down to his knees to field it on a short hop and scampered to touch second base before throwing out Yelich at first to end it.

King earned his first save since 2023, his first in the postseason and his first for the Padres.

Contreras homered and had three hits for the Brewers, who lost their 12th consecutive postseason road game in a streak dating to the 2018 National League Championship Series.

Yelich even got his first playoff RBI since 2018 with a seventh-inning single, but Milwaukee fell behind early and never led, leaving 11 runners on base.

Neither team had announced its Game 4 starter.

    —

This story has been corrected to show King started Game 2, not Game 1.

  • Yoshinobu Yamamoto fans 10 as Dodgers take 2-1 NLDS lead over Braves

ATLANTA (AP) Yoshinobu Yamamoto felt trust from Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts when he remained in a crucial NL Division Series game after a stressful fifth inning.

“I’d like to continue living up to the highest expectation,” Yamamoto said through a translator.

The right-hander from Japan continues to do more than just meet expectations in the postseason.

Yamamoto struck out 10 in seven brilliant innings, Kiké Hernández hit a two-run homer and the Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 3-1 on Tuesday night to take a 2-1 lead in their NL Division Series.

Yamamoto dominated his much-anticipated matchup with Atlanta ace Chris Sale, who allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings. Last year’s World Series MVP permitted only four hits and one walk while improving to 8-1 with a 2.14 ERA in 11 career postseason outings, including 10 starts.

His 10 strikeouts were a postseason high for him.

“I was confident and able to control all my pitches today,” Yamamoto said.

The Dodgers can clinch the best-of-five series and take another step toward becoming the first National League team to win three consecutive World Series by beating the Braves again Wednesday night in Game 4.

Atlanta hoped giving Sale extra rest would be a winning formula in the pivotal third game. Instead, after stranding six runners in the first three innings, he gave up the two-run homer to Hernández and a solo shot to former Braves star Freddie Freeman in the fourth.

“He was still touching 100 (mph),” manager Walt Weiss said of Sale. “The stuff was fine. Like I said, maybe the command not perfect. It wasn’t bad. But they did a nice job against him.”

That was all the offensive support Yamamoto and relievers Tanner Scott and Edwin Díaz would need.

Ozzie Albies opened the Atlanta ninth with a double off the right-center wall against Díaz and moved to third on Michael Harris II’s groundout. Díaz stranded the runner and earned a save when Mauricio Dubón fouled out to right field and Mike Yastrzemski grounded out to shortstop Mookie Betts.

Freeman said he didn’t mind being booed by Atlanta fans in the sellout crowd of 42,420.

“I’ve got a gray uniform on,” Freeman said. “I expect boos. It’s OK. … It’s all love. I still love everybody here and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

Dubón made a leaping catch over the left-field wall to rob Freeman of a home run in the third. Freeman wouldn’t be denied an inning later. Hernández’s homer to left drove in Andy Pages, who singled. One out later, Freeman pulled his 18th career postseason homer to right field for a 3-0 lead.

Roberts moved designated hitter Shohei Ohtani down to No. 5 in the lineup because Ohtani was 3 for 15 in his career against Sale. Ohtani went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts against Sale when the Dodgers lost 1-0 on Aug. 26 in Atlanta.

Roberts correctly predicted Ohtani would have opportunities with runners on base hitting lower in the order.

With runners on first and second in the first, Sale struck out Ohtani to end the inning. With two runners on base in the third, Ohtani reached on catcher’s interference by Drake Baldwin to load the bases before Miguel Rojas ended the inning with a flyball to right field. Ohtani walked to lead off the eighth against Brent Suter, Atlanta’s fourth pitcher.

Baldwin’s bases-loaded grounder to first base drove in Dubón, who singled, in the fifth for Atlanta’s only run.

Rojas left during an at-bat in the eighth. The second baseman appeared to injure his back on a swing and was replaced by Tommy Edman. The Dodgers announced the injury as lower back pain.

Roberts said Rojas probably won’t start on Wednesday and his availability off the bench will be determined before the game.

“I give him credit for conceding that at-bat,” Roberts said.

Weiss made a late change, moving Ronald Acuña Jr. from right field to designated hitter. Weiss said Acuña jammed his knee on a slide in Game 2. Acuña remained in the game but the knee was sore on Tuesday, leading to the lineup change.

Roberts now has 71 career postseason wins, tying Tony La Russa for second-most in major league history. Joe Torre is first with 84.

Braves right-hander Tyler Mahle is expected to face Dodgers right-hander Tyler Glasnow in Game 4 on Wednesday night. Mahle said Tuesday an abdominal pull is now a “non-issue.” He felt the pull before allowing one run in seven innings of a 4-3 loss to Philadelphia in 10 innings during the NL Wild Card Series last week.

    LOSS
Miguel Rojas delivers the clutch home run in game seven last season against the Toronto Blue Jays in the World Series. In game two against the Braves he had just one at bat but was able to get a double. He also does have a recent hit against Chris Sale on August 27th. Sale delivered a complete game gem, but Rojas had one of the Dodgers five hits. Look for Rojas to get at least one hit tonight, as he clears his combination line.

    WIN
The Braves have won Chris Sale’s last six starts, including a 1-0 win against the Dodgers on August 27th. That game featured Yoshi Yamamoto, and they hook up today in Game 3 of the NLDS, all tied up at one apiece. It should be an epic battle. The one run allowed by Yamamoto in August was the only run he’s allowed against the Braves in his last three starts against them. Lean to the Dodgers, but playing the under.
