  • No. 3 Duke routs Syracuse 101-64, shifts focus to weekend showdown versus No. 1 Michigan

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) Cameron Boozer had 22 points and 12 rebounds and helped No. 3 Duke Blue Devils rout Syracuse Orange 101-64 victory Monday night.

Isaiah Evans scored 21 points, Nikolas Khamenia added 14 points off the bench and Patrick Ngongba and Cayden Boozer each had 12 for the Blue Devils (24-2, 13-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who looked primed for a weekend nonconference showdown with top-ranked Michigan.

Duke shot 62.3% from the field, including 12 for 20 from 3-point distance.

Boozer shot eight for 10 from the field and finished with the 14th double-double of his freshman season.

William Kyle III scored 12 points and Nate Kingz added 10 for Syracuse (15-12, 6-8), which failed to carry the momentum from back-to-back victories for the first time since winning three straight in January.

The Orange were slowed by 41.3% (26 for 63) shooting from the field and 37% (10 for 27) from long distance. Syracuse didn’t surpass its season low of 59 points until 1:21 remained in the game.

Duke reached the 100-point mark for the fourth time this season – and the first time since November 21. Blue Devils have won three straight games since their last-second loss at rival North Carolina on Feb. 7.

The Blue Devils made a variety of dunks and lay-ins while hitting 13 of their first 14 shots in the second half while stretching their lead to 74-45. They shot 9 for 12 in the second half from 3-point distance.

Duke used an 11-0 run to end the first half for a 40-24 lead at the break. The Blue Devils shot 51.7% before the break. Syracuse was at 32.2%, including 4 for 16 from distance.

Syracuse: Host No. 16 North Carolina on Saturday.

Duke: Faces No. 1 Michigan in Washington.

Back to-back wins at the Dome vs. Cal and SMU suggest there’s still some juice left in the Orange, and Adrian Autry’s team was able to hang around at ranked Virginia previous to the recent successes. In the SMU win, worth noting that Autry gave increased minutes to Carmelo’s Anthony’s son Kiyan, who responded with a pair of triples plus a conventional and-one as the ‘Cuse traded punches in the later minutes, and young Anthony even spent more time on the court than starting PG JJ Starling, and almost all hands on deck since top scorer F Donnie Freeman (17.6 ppg) returned in early January after missing a month. “Totals” alert–note “unders” in six straight and nine of ten for the Dookies. • No. 10 Boise State grabs CFP spot, beating No. 19 UNLV 21-7 in Mountain West championship

BOISE, Idaho (AP) Ashton Jeanty ran for 209 yards and a touchdown and No. 10 Boise State earned a College Football Playoff spot, beating No. 19 UNLV 21-7 on Friday night for its second straight Mountain West title.

Boise State (12-1, No. 10 CFP) is all but assured of a first-round bye in the playoffs if it maintains its ranking ahead of the Big 12 winner and finishes as one of the four highest-ranked conference champs.

“In January when they were playing tug of war on the field with their shirts off, they talked about what they wanted to do this season,” Boise State coach Spencer Danielson said. “They wanted to win a conference championship and make it to the college playoffs, and they worked for that.”

Jeanty, who had the spotlight to himself to state his Heisman case, didn’t disappoint, ripping off an electrifying 75-yard touchdown run. It was his fifth TD run of 70 yards or more this season, tying LaDainian Tomlinson’s FBS season record.

Jeanty also surpassed 1981 Heisman winner Marcus Allen of Southern California to move into fourth place on the FBS season rushing list and needs 132 more to pass record-holder Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State.

Maddux Madsen threw a touchdown pass and rushed for another score for the Broncos.

UNLV (10-3, No. 20 CFP), which entered the game seventh nationally in scoring offense averaging 38.7 points, hadn’t been held below 23 this season.

“I have been in championship games before and come up on the wrong end of them,” UNLV coach Barry Odom said. “But you continue to learn from them and move your organization forward and find a way to get back to a game like this and win it.”

However, Odom didn’t mince words when describing how he felt about Boise State, which handed his team two of their three losses.

“Good luck to anyone who comes here and thinks they’re going to win the game,” Odom said. “I think they’re one of the best teams in college football right now. And I think they’ll do a great job representing this conference. They’re built to make a run.”

With UNLV loading the box with eight or nine defenders early in the game, Boise State leaned heavily on Madsen in the first quarter. And he delivered, completing six of his first seven passes, including a 22-yard scoring strike to Latrell Caples for a 7-0 lead.

Madsen used his legs to put the Broncos ahead 14-0, scrambling for a 14-yard TD run with 2:40 left in the first half.

After a quick stop, Boise State got the ball back and let Jeanty work his magic. Two plays later, he raced through the teeth of the defense and sprinted to the end zone for a 75-yard TD run, giving the Broncos a 21-0 lead with 29 seconds left in the half.

UNLV had a chance to claw back into it late in the third quarter when Kylin James raced 86 yards before Seyi Oladipo ran him down at the Boise State 5. But the Rebels lost 4 yards on the next four plays and failed to score.

The Rebels finally got into the end zone with 9:06 left on a Greg Burrell 31-yard run.

Hajj-Malik Williams led UNLV offensively with 110 yards passing and 56 yards rushing.

UNLV: Odom, who guided the Rebels to their first 10-win season in 40 years, has the program headed in the right direction after UNLV had just seven wins in the three seasons before his arrival. If he continues to recruit well and build through the transfer portal like he did this season, the Rebels should contend for the Mountain West title.

Boise State: First-year coach Spencer Danielson delivered what the program’s fan base has been starving for since it made waves in the college football world in 2006 by going undefeated and beating Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. But now this team has a chance to take it one step further and take down one of the sport’s blue bloods in the playoffs.

Boise State awaits the selection show Sunday to find out who and when it will play in the College Football Playoff.

  • No. 24 Army wins AAC championship in first attempt as Daily runs for 4 TDs in 35-14 win over Tulane

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) The first conference championship celebration in Army history was underway at midfield and Bryson Daily made clear it would be a brief one.

The Black Knights are going after another trophy next week.

    “Beat Navy,” Daily said.

He and the Black Knights ought to be a tough matchup for the Midshipmen – or just about anyone.

Daily rushed for four touchdowns to tie the American Athletic Conference championship game record, and No. 24 Army completed a perfect first season in the league by beating Tulane 35-14 on Friday night.

Kanye Udoh rushed for 158 yards, including a 72-yarder to set up a Daily TD, and a score. Daily added 126 yards on the ground for the Black Knights (11-1), who overwhelmed AAC opponents with their bruising, clock-eating rushing attack during their first around the league, then ran it to perfection in the championship game. Army won the first conference title in its 134-year history.

The Black Knights have one game left in the regular season and it’s they one they want most: against Navy next Saturday for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy.

“Now we’ve got the biggest game of the year coming up in eight days and we’re looking forward to that,” Army coach Jeff Monken said.

Daily had runs of 5, 3, 4 and 7 yards. The 221-pound quarterback’s four rushing scores gave him 29 this season, breaking the AAC record of 25 set by Navy QB Will Worth in 2016. The conference player of the year has rushed for multiple TDs in 10 consecutive games.

Except for an unsuccessful stint in Conference USA from 1998-2004, the Black Knights had played as an independent since their program began in 1890. Monken said this week that Army felt that it needed to be in a conference to have a pathway to college football’s expanded postseason.

As cadets poured out of the stands to join players in a midfield celebration, the Black Knights must have been loving the decision.

Darian Mensah threw two touchdown passes for Tulane (9-4), which was playing in its third straight AAC championship game and has lost the last two. The Green Wave had hopes of hosting before losing at home to Memphis on Thanksgiving night, ending their 17-game winning streak in conference games.

They were even shakier Friday, botching field goal attempts after their first two drives, then fumbling a kickoff and having a pass intercepted in their own territory on the next two.

Then Tulane could barely get its hands on the ball in the second half, when Army had TD drives of 11 and 16 plays.

“When you start slow the way we did, missing two field goals early, you don’t do yourselves any favors,” Tulane coach Jon Sumrall said, “because once they get a lead, a couple scores, it’s really, really hard to overcome.”

A temperature of 29 degrees to begin just the third December game in the 101-season history of Michie Stadium demanded a strong running attack, and nobody does it better than Army, which came in leading the country with 312.5 rushing yards per game.

Army gained 335 on the ground and went 4 for 5 on fourth down.

Daily didn’t even attempt a pass until the second half – when he kept a scoring drive alive with a 9-yard completion on fourth-and-5.

The Green Wave were asked during the week about playing in the chilly conditions along the Hudson River, and the weather may have been a factor when Tulane attempted a field goal after a good first drive. Holder Brice Busch dropped the snap on the Army 27.

Army promptly went 72 yards in 11 plays for Daily’s 5-yard score. Tulane got inside the Army 20 again on its second drive but had to settle for another field goal attempt. The Green Wave handled the snap this time but Patrick Durkin’s kick was wide right from 38 yards.

Daily’s 4-yard run made it 21-0 before Tulane finally got on the board on Mensah’s 42-yard pass to Mario Williams with 44 seconds left in the half.

But Army regained control with a 6 1/2-minute drive to open the third quarter.

Tulane: The Green Wave will regret their untimely and uncharacteristically sloppy play to finish the regular season after never losing the turnover battle in any game until their last two.

Army: The Black Knights’ opponents know what’s coming and only current No. 4 Notre Dame, which routed Army at Yankee Stadium last month, has been able to stop it.

Tulane: The Green Wave fell out with the Memphis loss after going into the game ranked 18th and won’t get back in.

Army: The Black Knights will extend to a ninth straight week in the AP Top 25, their longest stretch since being ranked each week of the 1958 season.

    Tulane: Awaits its bowl destination.

Army: Faces Navy next Saturday in Landover-Maryland.

  • Dan Campbell’s 4th-down gambles help Lions beat Packers 34-31 and clinch playoffs

DETROIT (AP) Dan Campbell’s gambles paid off.

Detroit went for it on fourth down for a fifth time to set up Jake Bates’ 35-yard field goal as time expired, Jared Goff threw three touchdown passes and the Lions clinched a playoff spot with a 34-31 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night.

Campbell has been perhaps the NFL’s most aggressive coach since taking over what was a league laughingstock in 2021, but he turned it up a notch against the Packers with a short-handed defense that he wanted to keep off the field.

“That was how I wanted to play that team with where we are at,” Campbell said.

The NFC-best Lions (12-1) broke a franchise record with their 11th straight win – including two over the Packers (9-4) – to stay ahead of Minnesota (10-2) in the highly competitive NFC North.

“This will be one of those you’ll never forget,” Campbell said.

Campbell kept his offense on the field on a fourth-and-1 at the Green Bay 21 with 43 seconds left. David Montgomery ran for 7 yards, barely getting a handoff from Goff after the quarterback got his feet tangled up and was falling toward the turf.

“It’s a bad feeling,” Goff said.

The play ensured the Lions could try a field goal without giving Green Bay the ball back, and Bates hit his third-game winning kick this season.

“I just felt like we needed to end it on offense,” Campbell said. “I did not want to give the ball back and I believed we could convert. I trust the O-line. I trust David.”

Goff threw two touchdown passes on fourth-and-goal, one to Tim Patrick, who had two TD catches. He also threw an interception in the third quarter to set up one of Josh Jacobs’ career-high matching three TD runs.

Goff found Jahymr Gibbs open in the end zone for a 2-yard pass on a fourth down with 11 seconds left in the first half to put Detroit ahead 17-7. Goff later connected with Patrick on a go-ahead, 1-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter.

Green Bay took advantage of the only time Campbell’s aggressiveness didn’t pan out, denying Gibbs on a fourth-down run late in the third quarter from the Detroit 31.

Jacobs scored for a third time on a 3-yard run on the ensuing drive.

“The risk was there,” Campbell said.

Brandon McManus made a 32-yard field goal with 3:38 left to pull the Packers into a 31-all tie in a game that had four lead changes earlier in the second half.

“That’s exactly the kind of game we expected,” Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur said. “It was tough and it went back and forth. There were just a couple plays that didn’t go our way.”

The Lions’ final drive began with Goff’s 19-yard pass to Jameson Williams. He also connected with Amon-Ra St. Brown for 16 yards on the decisive possession. Goff finished 32 of 41 for 283 yards, and six Lions had at least five receptions, the first time that’s happened in NFL history, according to OptaSTATS.

“They have great playmakers and they just get them the ball,” LaFleur said. “Jared Goff is an excellent quarterback and we gave him time to throw.”

Jordan Love was 12 of 20 for 206 yards with a touchdown pass to Tucker Kraft early in the third quarter.

“They have a really good offense, but so do we,” Love said. “I don’t think there was any extra pressure on us. We just got off to a slow start.”

LaFleur lamented that someone holding the American flag during the national anthem ended up shouting at the Packers and had to be separated from them by officials before the game.

“He was yelling at our players and giving the throat-slash gesture,” LaFleur said. “I’ve never seen anything like that. I would just like security to step in there and get him off the field.”

Packers: S Evan Williams (concussion), S Javon Bullard (ankle), DE Lukas Van Ness (thumb) were hurt during the game. CB Jaire Alexander (knee), LB Edgerrin Cooper (hamstring), CB Corey Ballentine (knee) and WR Romeo Doubs (concussion) were inactive.

Lions: DL Alim McNeill left with a head injury after he was evaluated for a concussion and returned to play briefly. OT Taylor Decker (shoulder), DT DJ Reader (shoulder), DE Josh Paschal (knee) and DL Levi Onwuzurike (hamstring) were inactive.

Packers: At NFC West-leading Seattle in a Sunday night game on Dec. 15.

Lions: Host AFC East-leading Buffalo on Dec. 15.

LOS ANGELES (AP) Jackson Shelstad scored 21 of his career-high 24 points after halftime and No. 12 Oregon beat USC 68-60 in the Big Ten Conference debut for both teams Wednesday night.

Shelstad made 12 of 14 free throws and reserve Keeshawn Barthelemey added 18 points on 4-for-5 shooting from 3-point range.

Oregon’s leading scorers, Nate Bittle and TJ Bamba, each had just five points. Bittle entered averaging 14.6 per game, and Bamba was averaging 13.

    Oregon (9-0, 1-0) shot 21 of 55 (38.2%) from the field, including 8 of 23 (34.8%) on 3s.

Desmond Claude had 20 points for USC (5-4, 0-1), and Chibuzo Agbo added 18 while making all 10 of his foul shots.

Oregon: After trailing for most of the game, the Ducks surged ahead late. Shelstad hit a 3-pointer with 4:10 remaining to break a 55-all tie and give Oregon its first lead since 2-0.

USC: The starters did the lion’s share of the work as coach Eric Musselman used four players off the bench – one of whom played just one minute. The reserves contributed eight points, all by Kevin Patton, in 50 combined minutes.

Bamba missed his first 11 shots before burying a corner 3 to trim Oregon’s deficit to 49-44 with eight minutes left. The Ducks took control with a 10-0 run aided by five USC turnovers down the stretch.

Oregon outscored the Trojans 22-7 in the final 6 1/2 minutes.

Oregon hosts UCLA on Sunday. USC plays at Washington on Saturday.

  • Walter Clayton scores 27 points, No. 13 Florida beats Virginia 87-69 in SEC/ACC Challenge

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) Walter Clayton scored 27 points, Alex Condon added 19 points and eight rebounds and No. 13 Florida beat Virginia 87-69 in the SEC/ACC Challenge on Wednesday night to remain unbeaten.

Clayton hit five 3-pointers, including a four-point play in the second half, as the Gators (9-0) matched their best start since the 2005-06 season. That one ended with a national championship. This one looks promising, especially considering Florida has won every game by at least 13 points.

Turnovers had a lot to do with the latest victory. The Gators scored 20 points off 15 turnovers, forcing the Cavaliers (5-3) into mistake after mistake.

Virginia was a 17 1/2-point underdog, according to BetMGM, and held tough early. But the Gators showed their talent and depth while erasing a nine-point deficit and pulling away in the second half.

Alijah Martin chipped in 16 points for Florida, and Denzel Aberdeen added 12.

Elijah Saunders led Virginia with 19 points. Isaac McKneely finished with 12 points, seven boards and five assists.

Virginia: The Cavaliers have lost their three toughest games by double digits, including 64-42 to Tennessee and 80-55 to St. John’s.

Florida: A day after expressing little concern about Virginia’s defensive prowess or McKneely – “I ain’t worried about him” – Clayton proved to be the best player on the court. He hit 10 of 19 shots.

The Gators hit three 3-pointers to spark a 15-0 run that turned a six-point deficit into a nine-point lead in the first half. Aberdeen hit two shots from long range.

Florida had nine steals, giving coach Todd Golden’s team 74 in nine games.

Virginia opens ACC play at SMU on Saturday, and Florida plays Arizona State in the Holiday Hoopsgiving in Atlanta on Dec. 14.

  • Kucherov scores with 55 seconds to play as Lightning rally for 4-3 win over Golden Knights

    AP

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Nikita Kucherov scored the go-ahead goal with less than a minute to play just 1:27 after Brandon Hagel had tied it, and the Tampa Bay Lightning rallied to beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 on Thursday night.

Kucherov’s second goal of the game with 55 seconds left was his sixth of the season.

Janis Moser had a goal and two assists for the Lightning, who remain unbeaten at 3-0-0. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 22 saves.

Brayden McNabb, Pavel Dorofeyev and Ivan Barbashev had goals for Vegas. Adin Hill turned aside 21 shots.

Jack Eichel, with two assists on Thursday, now has 10 points this season in five games and reached reached double-digit points faster than any other player in Vegas history. He is the 10th U.S.-born player to accomplish the feat.

After Barbashev put Vegas up 3-2 early in the second, Hagel pulled Tampa Bay even at 3 with 2:22 remaining in the third.

Kucherov tied it at 2 during a two-on-one with 12.8 seconds left in the first.

Golden Knights: The line of Eichel, Barbashev and Mark Stone has combined for eight goals, 19 assists and 27 points through five games.

Lightning: Jake Guentzel was the key free-agent signing with Steven Stamkos leaving for Nashville after 16 years with Tampa Bay. Guentzel has fit in nicely on the first line with Kucherov and Brayden Point, and has four assists.

Hill made three saves and the Vegas defenders blocked three shots to keep Tampa Bay from scoring during a 1:10 5-on-3 power play late in the second period.

Kucherov is the second Tampa Bay player to have six goals in the first three games of a season. Chris Kontos held the team record in the Lightning’s inaugural 1992-93 season.

Vegas plays Saturday night at Florida. Tampa Bay travels to Ottawa on Saturday night.

  • Tatis homers again as the Padres beat the Dodgers 6-5 for a 2-1 NLDS lead

    AP

SAN DIEGO (AP) Fernando Tatis Jr.’s towering two-run home run highlighted a six-run second inning, and the San Diego Padres held on to beat Shohei Ohtani and the rival Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 on Tuesday night to take a 2-1 lead in a tense NL Division Series.

The Padres moved within one victory of eliminating the Dodgers in the NLDS for the second time in three seasons. Game 4 is Wednesday night at Petco Park, which was packed with a rally towel-waving record crowd of 47,744.

The fans roared as Robert Suarez struck out Gavin Lux on a full-count pitch to complete a four-out save.

Tatis’ impressive homer gave the Padres a 6-1 lead, but Teoscar Hernández hit a grand slam with one out in the third off Michael King to bring the Dodgers within a run.

Mookie Betts also homered for the Dodgers to break an 0-for-22 playoff slump, but apparently thought left fielder Jurickson Profar had robbed him like he did in Sunday night’s 10-2 Padres win at Dodger Stadium, when tempers flared on the field and in the stands. Betts rounded first and headed toward the dugout before teammates and even King motioned that it was a homer.

Tatis’ shot into the left-field seats was his third of the series, leaving him one shy of the NLDS record held by Carlos Beltran (2004, Houston) and Nick Castellanos (2023, Philadelphia). Tatis had two of San Diego’s six homers Sunday night. The flamboyant Tatis stood for a few seconds and watched the ball sail out of the yard, flipped his bat and gestured toward the dugout before beginning his trot.

King got his second win in as many playoff starts after allowing five runs and five hits in five innings, with three strikeouts and one walk. He was coming off a gem in the opening game of the Wild Card Series against Atlanta, when he became the first pitcher in history to have 12 strikeouts with no runs and no walks in a postseason debut in San Diego’s 4-0 win.

Betts gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the first after some confusion.

He lofted a flyball to the left-field corner with one out in the first inning at almost the same distance as he did in Dodger Stadium on Sunday night, when Profar leaped and reached into the crowd to make the catch. After Profar landed, he trolled the fans by staring at them and bouncing up and down several times before throwing the ball to the infield.

Profar leaped again Tuesday night but couldn’t bring it back, with the ball ticking off his glove and into the crowd. Betts rounded first and turned toward the dugout before he got to second. Betts’ teammates in the dugout, including Max Muncy, motioned for him to keep going and King gestured with his right arm that it was fair.

Betts resumed his trot after his first playoff hit since Game 3 of the 2022 NLDS against San Diego, which the Padres won in four games.

San Diego’s second-inning outburst came against losing pitcher Walker Buehler, who was making his first playoff start since Game 6 of the NLCS against Atlanta. Buehler missed the 2023 season after undergoing a second Tommy John surgery in August 2022.

The first five Padres batters reached and scored. Xander Bogaerts drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and David Peralta hit a two-run double. Kyle Higashioka hit a sacrifice fly two batters before Tatis homered with two outs.

Manny Machado hit a leadoff single and ended up on third after first baseman Freddie Freeman fielded Jackson Merrill’s grounder and hit Machado on the left shoulder while throwing to second from his knees.

Buehler also went five innings, allowing six runs and seven hits with no strikeouts and one walk.

The Dodgers opened the third by loading the bases on consecutive singles by Miguel Rojas, Shohei Ohtani and Betts before Hernández hit a towering shot to straightaway center.

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Dodgers: SS Miguel Rojas came out of the game in the top of the third. … Freeman was back in the lineup after coming out after five innings on Sunday night with discomfort in his sprained right ankle. He was lifted for a pinch-runner after limping to first on an eighth-inning single.

  • Packers release Aaron Jones after adding Josh Jacobs in 2024 NFL free agency: One of our ‘hardest decisions’

Jones’ tenure in Green Bay has come to a close

                Tyler Sullivan

    By Tyler Sullivan

     & Garrett Podell of cbssports.com

The Green Bay Packers have turned their backfield on its head. Off the heels of agreeing to terms with former Raiders running back Josh Jacobs, the team released veteran running back Aaron Jones. On top of Jacobs’ arrival, this severing of ties with Jones comes after contract talks between him and the Packers broke down. Jones was entering the final year of his contract in 2024 and was due $12 million for this season.

“We want to thank Aaron for his unwavering commitment to the Packers and the community over the past seven seasons,” Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said Monday in a statement on the team’s website. “It is certainly one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make in my time with the Packers and not one taken lightly. He has not only had a significant impact on the field and in the locker room, but he is one of the most beloved players in the community. We wish nothing but the best for Aaron and his entire family moving forward.”

The 29-year-old had spent his entire career with the Packers. He was drafted by the club in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of UTEP and blossomed into one of the more versatile backs in the league. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2020 and was the co-leader for rushing touchdowns (16) back in 2019.

“Today is a tough day for the Packers and our community. As good of a player as Aaron is on the field, he is an even better person,” Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said Monday in a statement on the team’s website. “When I arrived in Green Bay as a first-time head coach, he was instrumental in establishing our winning culture and always served as the greatest example of what it meant to be a Packer. Aaron will always be one of the best players I had the opportunity to coach. He, his son, Junior, his mom, Vurgess, and his family will be missed.”

In 2023, Jones was hampered by injuries and limited to just 11 games. When he was on the field, however, he was extremely productive, rushing for over 100 yards in the final five games of Green Bay’s season including its two playoff games. In his seven years with the franchise, he topped 1,000 scrimmage yards four times and had three campaigns with double-digit touchdowns.

Jones finishes his Packers career with the third-most rushing yards in team history with 5,940. His 45 rushing touchdowns rank fourth in franchise history and his 272 receptions ranked 19th.

On top of Jones’ departure, Jacobs’ arrival also calls into question Green Bay’s eagerness to retain fellow running back A.J. Dillon, who is also currently a free agent. If Dillon also is playing elsewhere in 2024, that would mean 320 total carries from last season are now up for grabs with Jacobs likely set to inherit the lion’s share.

  • Raiders OC search: Options after Kliff Kingsbury withdraws himself from consideration, per report

Could the Commanders be Kingsbury’s next stop?

                Bryan DeArdo

    By Bryan DeArdo

& Jordan Dajani of cbssports.com contributing

    kingsbury-cardinals-usatsi.jpg

While he was expected to be named the Las Vegas Raiders‘ new offensive coordinator, Kliff Kingsbury apparently has other ideas in mind. Kingsbury has withdrawn his name from consideration to be the Raiders’ next OC, according to ESPN. Kingsbury’s decision comes after both sides considered it a formality that he was coming to Las Vegas, according to The Athletic

Kingsbury had been discussed as an offensive coordinator candidate with the Washington Commandersaccording to CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones. Washington could possibly still be in play for Kingsbury’s services given Saturday’s news.

With Kingsbury no longer in play, the Raiders will continue their search for a new OC. Luke Getsy, who recently served as the OC in Chicago, was considered a strong candidate during the initial interview process, via ESPN. The team has also spoken to former Chiefs/Commanders OC Eric Bieniemy and Pep Hamilton, who in 2022 served as the Texans‘ OC.

The Raiders interviewed a couple big names for this job. NFL Media reports that Vegas interviewed current UCLA head coach Chip Kelly at least twice, but had reportedly targeted Kingsbury for the job. The 44-year-old reportedly interviewed with several teams for their offensive coordinator openings, including the Philadelphia EaglesChicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers

Kingsbury served as an offensive analyst for USC this past season after he was fired by Arizona last January. He went 28-37-1 during four seasons with the Cardinals, and made the playoffs in 2021 after going 11-6. After going 5-10-1 in his first NFL season, Kingsbury improved his win total by three wins each of the next two years. Then, things fell apart in 2022, as Arizona finished in last place in the NFC West with a 4-13 record. Previously, Kingsbury served as the head coach at Texas Tech, and offensive coordinator at Texas A&M the year Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy.

When the Raiders fired Josh McDaniels in the middle of last season, Antonio Pierce stepped in and immediately improved the defense. From Weeks 9-18, the Raiders allowed an average of 16 points per game, which led the league. As for the offense, Vegas finished with the sixth-worst unit in yards per game (289.5), and 10th-worst in points per game (19.5).

The Raiders have several questions to answer this offseason, such as who will be the starting quarterback and if Josh Jacobs will re-sign with the club. They also still need to figure out who their next offensive coordinator is going to be.
