  • 2026 Winter Olympics medal count: Keep track of Team USA’s quest for gold in Italy

The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, will run from Friday, Feb. 6 through Sunday, Feb. 22. Over the course of those two weeks, athletes from 92 countries — not including Russia or Belarus — will compete in 16 different sports.

At the 2022 Beijing Olympics, the United States finished tied for third in the gold medal count, just behind Norway and Germany. The U.S. brought home nine gold medals, which was tied with China in that category, but the Americans finished fifth in the overall medal count with 25.

Team USA will try to improve upon those numbers in 2026, and they have some golden opportunities to do just that. Both the men’s and women’s hockey team should be in the running for a gold medal, Jordan Stolz is a favorite in speed skating, Chloe Kim is hitting the halfpipe in snowboarding and Mikaela Shiffrin will once again be on the ski slopes. And figure skaters Alysa Liu and Ilia Malinin have high potential to reach the podium.

Norway will attempt to defend its title as the most awarded country in the Winter Olympics, both from 2022 and all-time. The Norwegians won 16 gold medals and 37 total medals at the Beijing Games four years ago, and they possess a large edge in the all-time medal count. Norway has won 148 gold medals and 406 total medals in its 24 appearances at the Winter Olympics. The Americans are a distant second with 330 total medals.

Russian and Belarusian athletes are permitted to compete, but only as individuals under a neutral flag. They’ll be classified as “Individual Neutral Athletes,” and their medals won’t factor into the overall count. Russian and Belarusian teams are still banned from competing the Olympics.

Keep track of the live medal count over the next couple weeks as the United States looks to fill up its trophy case while competing across Northern Italy.

  • 2026 Winter Olympics: Team USA women’s hockey schedule, results and standings after shutout of Switzerland

After suffering a devastating loss to Canada in the gold medal game four years ago, the U.S. women’s hockey team is out for some revenge at the 2026 Winter Olympics. With a collection of proven Olympic veterans and rising stars, the Americans have rolled through their first three games of the preliminary round.

Team USA improved to 3-0-0-0 with a 5-0 blowout win over Switzerland on Monday. The U.S. has now outscored its opponents by a combined score of 15-1 at these Olympics, and the team turned in its second consecutive shutout effort after blanking Finland on Sunday.

The Americans got off to a decent start, but Swiss goalie Andrea Brandli held strong for a while, but the dam broke eventually. First-time Olympian Haley Winn got the scoring started in the first period, and the next two goals were also scored by Olympic rookies in Joy Dunne and Hannah Bilka. Gwyneth Phillips turned in a sparkling 21-save performance in goal.

The standout from Team USA’s domination of Switzerland was defenseman Caroline Harvey. The Wisconsin star had a three-point game, and her lone goal was a beauty. She blew by a Swiss defender, faked a shot and put a silky deke on Brandli for the tally.

This win sets the stage for Tuesday’s showdown with Canada, which was in the process of dismantling Czechia while the U.S. handled Switzerland. It may only be a preliminary round game, but the winner of Tuesday’s matchup will have the inside track for a gold medal.

Canada and United States are the only two countries that have won gold in women’s ice hockey since the event was added to the Olympics in 1998. The Americans won that inaugural year in Nagano, then endured four straight Canadian victories until 2018, when Team USA struck back with a dramatic overtime win to capture gold in Pyeongchang.

The Americans and Canadians will write another chapter in their heated rivalry on Tuesday.

If you haven’t caught curling fever yet, you’ve got just the excuse to catch the bug. The United States will be going for the gold medal in the mixed doubles event vs. Sweden this afternoon. Granted there’s not much history there, but if a bitter rivalry is what you crave then look no further than the United States’ women’s hockey team looking to close its perfect run through the preliminaries with a grudge match against the squad’s biggest rival — Canada.

Tuesday will also feature a return to the slopes, where Americans Mikeala Shiffrin and Breezy Johnson trying to reach the podium in the women’s team downhill slalom event that Lindsey Vonn was also attempting to take part in before Sunday’s horrific crash. In true Monday morning quarterback fashion, there has been a debate over whether Vonn should have even attempted to fix skis after she tore her ACL two weeks ago. Vonn may be 41, but her father has already weighed in with when he expects to see her race next.

The Milan Cortina Games will run through Sunday, Feb. 22, and in total of 119 events will take place with 245 medals handed out to the athletes. Fans can find the action on NBC and their streaming service Peacock, with an account or a cable login.

  • Dbacks recap and notes

    • Diamondbacks’ Andrew Saalfrank: Undergoes shoulder surgery

Saalfrank will miss the entire 2026 season after undergoing left shoulder surgery Monday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Saalfrank dealt with left shoulder fatigue this past September, and while he was cleared of structural damage at the time, subsequent testing evidently revealed the need for surgery. Specifics of Monday’s operation aren’t yet clear, but the loss of Saalfrank is a hit to a Diamondbacks bullpen already low on quality arms. The southpaw posted a 1.33 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 19:8 K:BB across 27 innings of work for Arizona in 2025.

    • Diamondbacks’ Ryne Nelson: Prepared for 30-plus starts

Nelson focused on getting physically stronger this offseason so that he can handle the rigors of 30 or more starts in 2026, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander has bounced between the rotation and bullpen the last three seasons but threw a career-high 154.0 innings in 2025. His first 10 appearances were out of the bullpen, before he shifted to the rotation in late May when Corbin Burnes required Tommy John surgery. With Burnes projected to be out until the second half of 2026, Nelson enters spring training with a guaranteed spot in the rotation, per general manager Mike Hazen. Nelson has relied heavily on his fastball but has also worked on his slider and curveball, and both pitches showed promise in 2025.

    • Diamondbacks’ Jordan Lawlar: Clearer path to roster

General manager Mike Hazen said that Lawlar will get the majority of his reps in the outfield this spring, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Hazen spoke to the media following a trade that sent Blaze Alexander — the team’s presumed starting left fielder — to the Orioles on Thursday. Hazen said that the team remains open to Lawlar playing some in the infield, but that his clearest path to the roster will come either in center or left field. Alexander’s departure could lead to Lawlar finally getting consistent run in the majors, but he’ll need a strong spring to bolster his case.

    • Diamondbacks’ Jose Mejia: Dealt to Arizona

The Diamondbacks acquired Mejia, Kade Strowd and Wellington Aracena from the Orioles on Thursday in exchange for Blaze Alexander, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Mejia spent nearly all of the 2025 season in the Florida Complex League, where he hit .274/.418/.411 with two homers and six steals. The 20-year-old has been used at second base, third base, first base, left field and right field thus far in his pro career and is merely a lottery ticket for Arizona.

    • Diamondbacks’ Wellington Aracena: Shipped to the desert

The Diamondbacks acquired Aracena, Kade Strowd and Jose Mejia from the Orioles on Thursday in exchange for Blaze Alexander, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Aracena was dealt from the Mets to the Orioles last July in the Gregory Soto trade and is on the move once again. The 21-year-old is an intriguing get for Arizona, having collected a 2.25 ERA and 114:51 K:BB over 92 innings covering 14 starts and nine relief outings between the Single- and High-A levels in 2025.

  • 2026 NFL Draft order: Full list of first-round picks, team needs and potential free agents after Super Bowl LX

    usatsi-27953464-2.jpg

    Imagn

The clock has expired on Super Bowl LX and a champion has been crowned, with the Seahawks smothering the Patriots en route to a 29-13 triumph.

That result means the full first-round order is now set for the 2026 NFL Draft. Preparations for next season are already underway, with draft day less than three months away.

As a reminder, four teams — Atlanta, Green Bay, Indianapolis and Jacksonville — do not own a first-round pick in 2026 due to draft-day trades, including the Micah Parsons and Sauce Gardner deals.

Here is the official 2026 NFL Draft order:

The 2026 NFL Draft will take place April 23-25 in Pittsburgh. More draft coverage is available at CBS Sports, including weekly mock drafts and regular looks at eligible prospects.

    Mike Renner
Renner's 2026 NFL mock draft 7.0: Predicting all 32 first-round picks after Super Bowl LX

    1. Las Vegas Raiders (3-14)

Potential free agents: CB Eric Stokes, EDGE Malcolm Koonce, K Daniel Carlson, OG Dylan Parham
Team needs: QB, WR, CB, S, DL, LB, IOL

Las Vegas over-extended last offseason by drafting a running back in the top 10 and trading for a 35-year-old quarterback despite having one of the league’s worst rosters. As a result, they fired head coach Pete Carroll after one season and are now picking even earlier in the draft.

    2. New York Jets (3-14)

Potential free agents: LB Quincy Williams, OG Alijah Vera-Tucker, RB Breece Hall, S Tony Adams, OG John Simpson
Team needs: QB, DL, CB, LB, S, IOL, WR

The Jets finished with one of the worst records in the league, but at least they have a plan and put themselves in a position to change the course of their franchise. Over the next two years, New York has five first-round picks.

    3. Arizona Cardinals (3-14)

Potential free agents: OT Jonah Williams, S Jalen Thompson, EDGE Calais Campbell, RB Michael Carter
Team needs: QB, OT, IOL, RB, LB, S, DL

Arizona made the decision to part with head coach Jonathan Gannon. It would not be a surprise if they moved on from Kyler Murray as well. The problem is that there are not a wealth of options to replace Murray.

    4. Tennessee Titans (3-14)

Potential free agents: OG Kevin Zeitler, TE Chig Okonkwo, DL Sebastian Joseph-Day, EDGE Arden Key, K Joey Slye
Team needs: CB, EDGE, WR, IOL, LB, TE

The positive momentum Tennessee had built over the past month of the regular season came to a frustrating end in the season finale. Still, Cam Ward’s strong finish to the 2025 campaign, in addition to Robert Saleh’s prowess coaching the defense, should give Titans fans hope.

    5. New York Giants (4-13)

Potential free agents: QB Russell Wilson, OT Jermaine Eluemunor, WR Wan’Dale Robinson, CB Cordale Flott, OG Greg Van Roten
Team needs: LB, EDGE, WR, IOL, OT, CB

There are reasons to be optimistic about Jaxson Dart’s future with the franchise. He brought life to an offense that could have easily wallowed in self-pity following the Malik Nabers and Andrew Thomas injuries. John Harbaugh can bring accountability and respectability to that organization.

    6. Cleveland Browns (5-12)

Potential free agents: OG Joel Bitonio, OG Wyatt Teller, TE David Njoku, OT Cam Robinson, C Ethan Pocic, LB Devin Bush
Team needs: OT, WR, QB, IOL, CB

The Browns made the decision to part with head coach Kevin Stefanski after six seasons. He did lead the franchise to its first playoff win post-expansion, but may not be any closer to identifying the quarterback of the future.

    7. Washington Commanders (5-12)

Potential free agents: WR Deebo Samuel, LB Bobby Wagner, QB Marcus Mariota, EDGE Von Miller, CB Jonathan Jones
Team needs: RB, WR, IOL, TE, LB, EDGE, S, CB

Next season is an easy sell for Washington. If Jayden Daniels returns healthy, then they will be competitive once again, but there are a lot of needs on that roster. An attempt to microwave those weaknesses last offseason did not work out.

    8. New Orleans Saints (6-11)

Potential free agents: LB Demario Davis, CB Alontae Taylor, EDGE Cameron Jordan, OG Luke Fortner
Team needs: WR, IOL, EDGE, LB, DL, CB, S

The Saints’ season ended just as fans were clamoring for more of Tyler Shough. He looks like the clear favorite to open next season as the starting quarterback, bringing a level of optimism that simply didn’t exist earlier in the year.

    9. Kansas City Chiefs (6-11)

Potential free agents: TE Travis Kelce, S Bryan Cook, CB Jaylen Watson, WR Hollywood Brown, RB Isiah Pacheco, LB Leo Chenal
Team needs: CB, S, DL, WR, TE, RB, EDGE

Kansas City will enter next season in unfamiliar territory: the hungry underdog. Assuming Patrick Mahomes‘ full health, there is no reason to believe the Chiefs will not be in the mix again next season. They do have a deteriorating roster that desperately needs a youthful infusion.

    10. Cincinnati Bengals (6-11)

Potential free agents: EDGE Trey Hendrickson, EDGE Joseph Ossai, S Geno Stone, CB Cam Taylor-Britt, QB Joe Flacco
Team needs: EDGE, CB, DL, S, LB, IOL, RB, TE

Joe Burrow made a notable attempt to get the Bengals into the playoffs after succumbing to an injury early in the season, but ultimately fell short. The offense will be in a spot to compete next season, but can the defense improve enough this offseason to get them enough stops?

    11. Miami Dolphins (7-10)

Potential free agents: CB Jack Jones, CB Kader Kohou, CB Rasul Douglas, TE Darren Waller, S Ifeatu Melifonwu
Team needs: QB, CB, S, TE, WR, IOL, DL, EDGE, LB

Fans can say what they want about the Mike McDaniel era in Miami, but few had such a recognizable aesthetic as the Dolphins’ former coach. It is a fresh start for the organization with a new general manager, new head coach and presumably a new quarterback.

    12. Dallas Cowboys (7-9-1)

Potential free agents: WR George Pickens, RB Javonte Williams, EDGE Jadeveon Clowney, S Donovan Wilson, LB Kenneth Murray
Team needs: CB, S, LB, RB, EDGE, WR

Dallas is once again searching for answers this offseason. Dak Prescott was healthy and the team still failed to reach the playoffs with a new head coach.

    13. Los Angeles Rams via Atlanta Falcons (8-9)

Potential free agents: OT Rob Havenstein, S Kamren Curl, CB Roger McCreary, TE Tyler Higbee, CB Derion Kendrick
Team needs: OT, CB, WR, S, QB

Atlanta fired Raheem Morris as head coach for a second time. They sent their first round pick to Los Angeles as part of the trade up for James Pearce Jr. Kevin Stefanski is no stranger to not having a first-round pick; the Browns did not have one three of his six years leading the franchise.

    14. Baltimore Ravens (8-9)

Potential free agents: DT Dre’Mont Jones, C Tyler Linderbaum, OG Daniel Faalele, TE Isaiah Likely, EDGE Kyle Van Noy
Team needs: IOL, WR, DL, EDGE, LB, CB, RB

For the first time since 2007, the Ravens will have a new head coach after firing John Harbaugh. It sounds as though the franchise chose Lamar Jackson — who turned 29-years-old one day after Harbaugh’s firing — over the veteran coach. Jesse Minter has been tabbed as Harbaugh’s replacement.

    15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-9)

Potential free agents: WR Mike Evans, CB Jamel Dean, TE Cade Otton, RB Rachaad White, LB Lavonte David, DL Logan Hall
Team needs: IOL, WR, LB, DL, TE, RB, CB

Other organizations have been quick to make a head coaching change, but the Buccaneers are going down the path of firing coordinators rather than a change at the top. 2026 is an important year for Todd Bowles.

    16. New York Jets via Indianapolis Colts (8-9)

Potential free agents: LB Quincy Williams, OG Alijah Vera-Tucker, RB Breece Hall, S Tony Adams, OG John Simpson
Team needs: QB, DL, CB, LB, S, IOL, WR

Cornerback Sauce Gardner struggled to stay healthy and the Colts’ pick being sent to New York rose precipitously by the week. Indianapolis has proof of concept when Daniel Jones was healthy.

    17. Detroit Lions (9-8)

Potential free agents: EDGE Al-Quadin Muhammad, DL Roy Lopez, LB Alex Anzalone, CB Amik Robertson, DL Levi Onwuzurike
Team needs: IOL, EDGE, DL, LB, CB

The coaching drain that took place after last season’s run was likely understated in the moment given the presence Dan Campbell has over that organization, but that, along with a few veteran offensive line departures, led to a much more tumultuous season.

    18. Minnesota Vikings (9-8)

Potential free agents: LB Eric Wilson, WR Jalen Nailor, OL Justin Skule
Team needs: TE, LB, CB, S, DL, WR, QB, EDGE

J.J. McCarthy’s season was volatile, which was once the expectation for a young quarterback. Recent rookie performances from Jayden Daniels and C.J. Stroud set unrealistic expectations for the majority. Caleb Williams is proof that situation matters.

    19. Carolina Panthers (8-9)

Potential free agents: C Cade Mays, RB Rico Dowdle, EDGE D.J. Wonnum, OG Brady Christensen, S Nick Scott
Team needs: IOL, LB, S, EDGE, CB, WR, RB

Although a loss in the wild card round as the home team was not a desirable conclusion, the Panthers have to be pleased with how the season played out considering they picked top-10 overall in April.

    20. Dallas Cowboys via Green Bay Packers (9-7-1)

Potential free agents: WR George Pickens, RB Javonte Williams, EDGE Jadeveon Clowney, S Donovan Wilson, LB Kenneth Murray
Team needs: CB, S, LB, RB, EDGE, WR

The team with the second worst record in the NFL Playoffs was also dispatched after building a 21-3 lead over the division rival Bears. It is going to be an interesting offseason for the Packers.

    21. Pittsburgh Steelers (10-7)

Potential free agents: QB Aaron Rodgers, S Kyle Dugger, OG Isaac Seumalo, WR Calvin Austin III, LB Cole Holcomb
Team needs: QB, WR, LB, CB, S, RB

An offseason of change has already begun for Pittsburgh, as it replaced Mike Tomlin with Mike McCarthy. A decision from veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers looms.

    22. Los Angeles Chargers (11-6)

Potential free agents: EDGE Khalil Mack, OG Zion Johnson, EDGE Odafe Oweh, WR Keenan Allen, OG Trevor Penning
Team needs: IOL, DL, EDGE, LB, CB, S, WR

The Chargers are headed home for the season after falling to the Patriots in the wild card round. Los Angeles will have new coordinators on each side of the ball this season.

    23. Philadelphia Eagles (11-6)

Potential free agents: LB Nakobe Dean, EDGE Jaelan Phillips, S Reed Blankenship, TE Dallas Goedert
Team needs: TE, CB, S, EDGE, WR, IOL

A frustrating season, for fans and receivers alike, came to an end against the 49ers. The Eagles will be doing some soul searching this offseason but have already moved on from their offensive coordinator.

    24. Cleveland Browns via Jacksonville Jaguars (13-4)

Potential free agents: OG Joel Bitonio, OG Wyatt Teller, TE David Njoku, OT Cam Robinson, C Ethan Pocic, LB Devin Bush
Team needs: OT, WR, QB, IOL, CB

The Jaguars have every reason to celebrate their accomplishments this season. Yes, they lost in the wild card round as the home team, but a year ago, they were making preparations for the No. 5 overall pick. The future is bright for a team who played most of this season without No. 2 overall selection Travis Hunter.

    25. Chicago Bears (11-6)

Potential free agents: S Kevin Byard, S Jaquan Brisker, CB Nahshon Wright, OT Braxton Jones
Team needs: DL, S, CB, EDGE, IOL, WR

It was a magical season for the Bears in Ben Johnson’s first season. There is hope and expectation where it had not been a year ago.

    26. Buffalo Bills (12-5)

Potential free agents: C Connor McGovern, EDGE Joey Bosa, OG David Edwards, LB Matt Milano, QB Mitchell Trubisky
Team needs: WR, IOL, EDGE, S, LB, CB

The stage was set for Josh Allen to excel in a playoff setting that excluded the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson, but it ended the same as every other year — in heartbreak. Sean McDermott is out of a job as a result.

    27. San Francisco 49ers (12-5)

Potential free agents: WR Jauan Jennings, OG Spencer Burford, RB Brian Robinson Jr., K Eddy Pineiro, EDGE Clelin Ferrell
Team needs: DL, WR, IOL, OT, LB, EDGE

San Francisco perhaps exceeded expectation this season considering the injuries and drama with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. They will be replacing defensive coordinator Robert Saleh once again.

    28. Houston Texans (12-5)

Potential free agents: OG Ed Ingram, DL Sheldon Rankins, WR Christian Kirk, EDGE Derek Barnett, DL Tim Settle
Team needs: OT, IOL, DL, RB, TE, LB

C.J. Stroud was awful to end the season, but the Texans should return the majority of their league-leading defense.

    29. Los Angeles Rams (12-5)

Potential free agents: OT Rob Havenstein, S Kamren Curl, CB Roger McCreary, TE Tyler Higbee, CB Derion Kendrick
Team needs: OT, CB, WR, S, QB

For the second and final time this season, the Rams have fallen to the Seahawks. Los Angeles should be in the mix once again with Matthew Stafford and Sean McVay returning.

    30. Denver Broncos (14-3)

Potential free agents: DL John Franklin-Myers, LB Alex Singleton, S P.J. Locke, LB Justin Strnad
Team needs: TE, LB, WR, DL, IOL, OT

Denver suffered the rare win that felt like a loss in the divisional round. It was learned after the game that Bo Nix had broken his ankle and would miss the AFC Championship. The season ended in the conference championship against New England, but Sean Payton has his team playing at a high level.

    31. New England Patriots (14-3)

Potential free agents: EDGE K’Lavon Chaisson, S Jaylinn Hawkins, DL Khyiris Tonga, TE Austin Hooper
Team needs: IOL, TE, S, EDGE, LB, RB

The Patriots experienced a magical one-year turnaround to advance to their first Super Bowl since 2019, but Drake Maye’s playoff struggles finally came back to bite him in a 29-13 defeat to the Seahawks.

    32. Seattle Seahawks (14-3)

Potential free agents: WR Rashid Shaheed, EDGE Boye Mafe, CB Josh Jobe, CB Coby Bryant, CB Tariq Woolen
Team needs: CB, WR, IOL, RB, EDGE, DL

The Seahawks secured their second Super Bowl title after dismantling the Patriots on Sunday night. Coach Mike Macdonald has built one of the league’s most dominant defenses in just two seasons, while free agent signing Sam Darnold completed his career resurgence with a Lombardi Trophy.

    Teams without a first-round pick

    Atlanta Falcons (8-9)

Potential free agents: TE Kyle Pitts, EDGE Arnold Ebiketie, LB Kaden Elliss, EDGE Leonard Floyd, DL David Onyemata

  • Suns report and news

    • Suns’ Cole Anthony: Not yet ready for debut

Anthony (not with team) is out for Tuesday’s game against the Mavericks, Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic reports.

Anthony has yet to join the Suns after being dealt from Milwaukee on Thursday, and he’ll need to wait at least one more day before making his Phoenix debut. His next chance to take the court will arrive Wednesday against the Thunder.

    • Suns’ Jalen Green: Light minutes in return

Green (hip/hamstring) logged eight points (2-6 FG, 0-3 3Pt, 4-4 FT), three assists and three rebounds over 17 minutes during the Suns‘ 109-103 loss to the 76ers on Saturday.

Green was cleared to return from a three-game absence due to a left hip contusion and right hamstring and hip injury management, making what was just his sixth appearance of the 2025-26 regular season. Given the extensive time he’s missed over the last few months, the fifth-year guard will likely continue to come off the bench for the foreseeable future and will have his minutes monitored while he rebuilds his conditioning. The Suns’ last two games before the All-Star break will be part of a back-to-back set Tuesday and Wednesday versus the Mavericks and Thunder, respectively, and Green will be a candidate to sit out one of those contests.

    • Suns’ Mark Williams: Extends double-double streak

Williams ended with 11 points (4-7 FG, 3-5 FT), 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals over 31 minutes during Saturday’s 109-103 loss to the 76ers.

Williams racked up a third consecutive double-double during the loss, marking his 13th time hitting the milestone this season. It’s been an impressive run for the big man, who finishes the week as one of the Western Conference’s most dependable centers. He’s averaged 15.3 points and 11.0 rebounds during the three-game stint.

    • Suns’ Devin Booker: Returns with 21 points, nine dimes

Booker (ankle) provided 21 points (5-12 FG, 1-7 3Pt, 10-11 FT), nine assists and two rebounds across 32 minutes during Saturday’s 109-103 loss to the 76ers.

Booker showed no signs of being hobbled by injury and didn’t appear to be operating with a minutes restriction Saturday in what was his return from a seven-game absence due to a right ankle sprain. Recently named an All-Star for the fifth time, Booker could be in line for a rest day during the upcoming week, when the Suns will close out their first-half schedule with a Tuesday/Wednesday back-to-back set versus the Mavericks and Thunder, respectively.

    • Suns’ Dillon Brooks: Paces team with 28 points

Brooks finished Saturday’s 109-103 loss to the 76ers with 28 points (11-23 FG, 2-10 3Pt, 4-4 FT), two rebounds, two assists and one steal over 36 minutes.

Although Brooks’ shot beyond the arc was ice cold, he was productive inside the perimeter and delivered his seventh 20-plus point performance over the past eight games. Although Jalen Green is working his way back into the rotation, Brooks’ role at the wing is secure thanks to a career-high average of 21.1 points per game.

  • Jalen Williams returns from injury, leads Thunder past Lakers 119-110 with SGA, Luka sidelined

LOS ANGELES (AP) Jalen Williams scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half of his return from a 10-game injury absence, and the Oklahoma City Thunder snapped their two-game skid with a 119-110 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night.

Reigning league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and current NBA scoring leader Luka Doncic both sat out due to injuries, leaving their supporting casts to play a Thunder-style physical game featuring 52 combined free throws.

LeBron James scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half for the Lakers, whose three-game winning streak ended with another ineffective defensive performance.

Jalen Williams, who had been out with a hamstring strain, and Jaylin Williams both hit big jumpers while the Thunder broke open a close game down the stretch. Chet Holmgren added a key put-back dunk with 1:17 to play for the NBA-leading Thunder, who had lost three of five.

Isaiah Joe scored 19 points and Alex Caruso added 17 from Oklahoma City’s bench. Holmgren had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Marcus Smart scored 19 points and Austin Reaves had 16 on a minutes restriction for Los Angeles, which dropped to a pedestrian 14-9 at home.

Jared McCain scored on his first two possessions and finished with seven points in his second game for the Thunder, who acquired the guard from Philadelphia by trade last week.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s abdominal injury will keep him out through the All-Star Game this weekend in Inglewood, California. The Lakers haven’t determined how long they’ll be without Doncic, who missed his second straight game with a mild hamstring strain.

    Thunder: At Phoenix on Wednesday.

Lakers: Host San Antonio on Wednesday.

Those who bought tickets for this one to see Shai Gilgeous-Alexander go up against Luka Doncic might want to ask for a refund as neither will be available tonight. The Lakers, however, got Austin Reaves back to active duty last week and have won all three since, with JJ Redick using Reaves off the been to good effect, especially last Thursday when scoring 35 in the win over the Sixers. There’s also still LeBron, who scored 25 in Saturday’s win over the Warriors. OKC romped 121-92 in the first meeting on November 12 when SGA scored 30 that night while King James didn’t play, and note the Thunder have now lost back-to-back games since SGA went out with his strained ab injury. • Gui Santos makes go-ahead layup late, scores 16 as Warriors rally to beat Grizzlies 114-113

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Gui Santos made a go-ahead layup with 19 seconds left and Al Horford stole the ball from Cam Spencer moments later after he rebounded a Memphis miss, and the Golden State Warriors rallied late to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 114-113 on Monday night.

Pat Spencer had 17 points and seven assists, leading seven players in double figures for a Warriors team missing Stephen Curry for the fourth straight game because of a lingering right knee injury that coach Steve Kerr said would keep him out of the All-Star Game on Sunday.

De’Anthony Melton’s layup with 2:46 left pulled the Warriors within 113-110 and Moses Moody made it a one-point game with 2 minutes remaining. Brandin Podziemski, Santos and Horford each scored 16 points, and Moody 15.

Earlier in the day, Curry’s backcourt mate, Jimmy Butler, underwent surgery in Los Angeles for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee that ended his season last month.

Ty Jerome scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half and also dished out seven assists for Memphis, outscored 11-0 to end the game after Jaylen Wells’ jumper with 4:17 to go.

Jahmai Mashack scored 17 points off the bench, Taylor Hendricks had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope contributed 15 points – and the Grizzlies reserves scored 68 points, most Golden State has given up to an opponent’s backups this season.

Memphis lost its third straight and ninth of 11. The Warriors won the first meeting 131-118 on Oct. 27 at Chase Center – and have won the last eight meetings overall at home dating to a 104-101 defeat at Chase Center on Oct. 28, 2021.

Golden State cut Memphis’ lead to 54-53 on a layup by Spencer with 2:58 remaining in the second quarter, then the Grizzlies closed the half with an 11-4 run for a 65-57 lead at the break – getting five straight points from Scotty Pippen Jr. during the stretch.

Draymond Green scored 14 points with four 3-pointers and moved past Latrell Sprewell (8,032) for 14th place on the Warriors’ franchise scoring list.

Grizzlies: At Denver on Wednesday night to wrap up a five-game trip before the All-Star break.

Warriors: Host San Antonio on Wednesday night.

As Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler are out, Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield just traded to Atlanta, and recently-added Kristaps Porzingis not scheduled to make his debut until after the All-Star break, maybe the Dubs should consider contacting Rick Barry for some help. Understandably, the Golden State firepower quotient has been reduced and reflected in Saturday’s loss to the Lakers in LA when the Dubs could only score 99. It was up to Moses Moody ((25 points) and Gus Santos (15 points) to lead the scoring. Not especially thrilled relying upon Memphis but the Griz efforts have stayed mostly competitive thru the trade deadline distractions and now minus Jaren Jackson, and we maintain the ongoing absence of Ja Morant isn’t a negative. Santos has now cleared this line in five straight games, and in six of eight with at least 22 minutes this season. Facing off against the Grizzlies, whose defensive rating is 29th overall the last 10 games, Santos should find ample opportunity to score. I’d play this line to over 12.5.

  • Brown scores 45, sets ACC frosh single-game scoring mark, ties Unseld’s record for No. 24 Cardinals

Louisville Cardinals, Ky. (AP) Mikel Brown Jr. had 10 3-pointers and scored an Atlantic Coast Conference freshman single-game record 45 points as No. 24 Louisville routed N.C. State 118-77 on Monday night.

Ryan Conwell added 31 and the Cardinals (18-6, 8-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) shot 60% for the game.

Brown eclipsed the previous ACC freshman record of 42 points, set last season by Duke’s Cooper Flagg. The 45 points also tied Hall of Famer Wes Unseld’s single-game Louisville scoring mark, set on Dec. 1, 1967, against Georgetown College.

After up-and-down scoring outputs in five games since returning from a lower back injury, the heralded freshman guard had 21 points with five 3s by halftime before erasing LaBradford Smith’s school freshman mark of 32 midway through the second.

Brown’s record-tying 3 came with 2:09 remaining, bringing a huge cheer from a white-clad crowd of 14,389 eager to see if he’d approach Unseld’s school mark.

He finished 14 of 23 from the field with a career-best 10 of 16 from beyond the arc, topping his previous best of 29 points against rival Kentucky in November. That had ranked fourth-best all time among Louisville freshmen coming in.

Louisville started off hot and didn’t cool off much, shooting 58% in the first half and finishing 39 of 65 overall. The Cardinals’ total included 18 3-pointers on 30 attempts, tying their second-highest output this season.

Ven-Allen Lubin had 20 points and Tre Holloman 19 for N.C. State (18-7, 9-3), which had won six in a row and entered 6-0 in ACC road games. The Wolfpack shot 41% and made just 18% from deep.

Conwell hit 10 of 14 shots and 5 of 6 from behind the arc.

N.C. State: Hosts Miami on Saturday.

Louisville: Takes on Baylor on Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas.

NC State ranks seventh in offensive efficiency since Jan. 1, and the Wolfpack are 6-1 in true road games. This will be a fast-paced, high-scoring shootout between two comparably talented teams. Louisville has covered four straight and seven of eight in this series, but I bet Will Wade’s team to keep it close on Big Monday.

Louisville has covered in four straight against the Wolfpack, despite being 1-3 SU in those games. These are two very similar teams, stats wise. However, NC State has versatility on defense to be able to limit the Cardinals three-point volume which could end up being the difference maker, along with protecting the ball edge to NC State.

  • Pitino climbs career wins list as No. 17 St. John’s fends off Xavier 87-82 in overtime

NEW YORK (AP) Zuby Ejiofor scored six of his 25 points in overtime and No. 17 St. John’s Red Storm outlasted pesky Xavier Musketeers 87-82 on Monday night at Madison Square Garden for its 10th consecutive victory.

With his 904th career win on the court, Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino passed Roy Williams for third place in Division I history behind Mike Krzyzewski (1,202) and Jim Boeheim (1,116).

It was Pitino’s second victory in 17 days over his son, Richard, the first-year coach of the Musketeers. In the previous meeting, the elder Pitino earned his 900th win when the Johnnies rallied from a 16-point deficit in the second half for an 88-83 victory at Xavier.

Bryce Hopkins added 19 points and nine rebounds for the Red Storm (19-5, 12-1 Big East), who won for the 15th time in 17 games and tied No. 6 UConn atop the conference standings.

St. John’s was coming off a rousing win Friday night at The Garden over the rival Huskies.

Dylan Darling had 16 points off the bench for the Johnnies. Ejiofor also provided seven rebounds and five assists, including a pass to Oziyah Sellers for the breakaway dunk that sealed it with 7 seconds left in OT.

St. John’s went 28 for 41 (68%) at the free-throw line, its most foul shots since taking 44 against Lehigh in November 2011. A trio of Xavier players fouled out in overtime – on three straight defensive possessions.

Tre Carroll, the Big East’s leading scorer, had 21 points and eight rebounds for the Musketeers (12-12, 4-9), who have lost five of six and eight of 11. He scored 11 in a row for Xavier in the second half and surpassed 1,000 career points.

Sellers tipped in his own miss with 16 seconds remaining in regulation to tie it at 78, and Carroll missed a wild 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

Rick Pitino improved to 5-1 in coaching matchups against his son. Fathers are 21-3 overall in such Division I games.

Xavier hosts Marquette on Saturday, after dropping their first meeting this season 66-65 on Jan. 7.

St. John’s visits Providence on Saturday looking to avenge its last loss, 77-71 on Jan. 3 at MSG.

Usually we’d hesitate to go with a team after such a rousing win at St John’s did against Big East leader UConn on Friday. Not tonight, however, as we suspect there is little chance the Red Storm (nine wins in a row) suddenly goes flat against Papa Rick Pitino’s son Richard and his Xavier, which already took a good shot at the Johnnies in Cincinnati two weeks ago and put a scare into Papa in an 88-83 St John’s escape. The Musketeers, however, have absorbed a couple of heavy losses since and been outclassed multiple times on the Big East trail, and dealing with the Storm’s excellent balance, near 85 ppg offense, and productive frontliners Zuby Ejifor and Bryce Hopkins looms difficult. Play St John’s.
