SF Giants Notes and recaps

  • Giants’ Lorenzo Meola: Lands with Giants

The Giants have selected Meola with the 116th overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

Meola has a terrific glove and took at step forward at the plate in his final year at Stetson, slashing .324/.402/.532 with 11 homers and 10 steals. While Meola is a safe bet to remain at shortstop, his offensive and fantasy ceiling is fairly limited and he will not be helped by having Oracle Park as his future home.

  • Giants’ Spencer Bivens: Picks up loss Sunday

Bivens took the loss in Sunday’s 5-2 extra-innings defeat to the Dodgers, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and one intentional walk while striking out one over one inning.

Tasked with protecting a tie game in the 11th inning, Bivens retired the first two batters he faced before surrendering three consecutive singles, allowing the Dodgers to take a commanding lead. The right-hander has been charged with five runs (four earned) in his last two outings. He now owns a 3.72 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and a 37:14 K:BB across 46 innings in 31 appearances this season.

  • Giants’ Jung Hoo Lee: Doubles in defeat

Lee went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk in Sunday’s 5-2 extra-innings loss to the Dodgers.

Lee lined a double to right field in the seventh inning, marking his first two-bagger since July 2. The 26-year-old struggled in June but has been productive over 10 appearances in July. During that span, Lee has posted a .324/.368/.486 slash line with six RBI, three runs scored, two triples and two doubles across 41 plate appearances.

  • Giants’ Trevor Cohen: Popped by Giants

The Giants have selected Cohen with the 85th overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

Cohen wasn’t expected to be drafted this early, as he only managed two combined home runs his first two years playing regularly for Rutgers. He broke out as a junior, slashing .387/.460/.523 with 19 steals and twice as many walks as strikeouts. However, he only hit two home runs in 57 games this spring, so power probably won’t be a big part of his game.

  • Giants’ Luis Matos: Forces extras with homer

Matos went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in Sunday’s 5-2 extra-innings loss to the Dodgers.

The Giants struggled to get any offense going until Matos delivered a game-tying homer in the ninth inning off Tanner Scott. The outfielder has gone 4-for-21 (.190) over seven games since returning to the big-league roster July 1 after a month-long stay with Triple-A Sacramento. Matos has struggled to a .172/.214/.387 slash line with five homers, 12 RBI, 11 runs scored and two stolen bases over 98 plate appearances at the big-league level. He will likely continue to serve in a short-side platoon role while in the majors, most often spelling Mike Yastrzemski in right field when the Giants face a southpaw.
