Arizona Cardinals notes from preseason game vs the Chiefs

  • Cardinals’ Jaylon Jones: Two tackles in preseason debut

Jones (shoulder) recorded two solo tackles in Saturday’s 20-17 preseason win over the Chiefs.

Jones signed with the Cardinals in the offseason after he underwent shoulder surgery in January, but he was able to give it a go in the team’s preseason opener. The 27-year-old is expected to serve as a depth option behind Garrett Williams at slot cornerback in 2025.

  • Cardinals’ Joey Blount: Four tackles versus KC

Blount (illness) recorded four total tackles (two solo) in Saturday’s 20-17 preseason win over the Chiefs.

Blount was battling an illness ahead of the team’s preseason opener, but he was ultimately active for the contest. The safety is expected to operate as a top reserve option behind Budda Baker, while also continuing to operate as a contributor on special teams in 2025.

  • Cardinals’ Blake Gillikin: Over foot injury

Gillikin (foot) punted three times in Saturday’s preseason opener against the Chiefs.

Gillikin’s three punts traveled 142 total yards, averaging 47.3 yards per kick. The 27-year-old punter missed the final four games of the 2024 season with a foot injury. Gillikin is the only punter in camp for the Cardinals.

  • Cardinals’ Christian Jones: Injures knee

Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon said Saturday that Jones suffered a knee injury during the team’s preseason opener, Bo Brack of GoPHNX.com reports.

Jones will have roughly one week to get healthy ahead of Arizona’s next preseason matchup, on the road against Denver on Saturday, Aug. 16. He’s expected to open the regular season playing a depth role at offensive tackle.

  • Cardinals’ Trey Benson: Strong start to preseason

Benson rushed nine times for 29 yards and brought in his only target for 20 yards during the Cardinals‘ 20-17 preseason win over the Chiefs on Saturday night.

The second-year pro, who’s projected to see an increased role in the coming season, fittingly led the Cardinals in rush attempts on the night. Benson logged his first touch on Arizona’s second possession, recording a nine-yard run. The FSU product also had a nice chunk gain on his one catch, and he’s likely to fill another robust role by preseason standards during the Cardinals’ second exhibition tilt against the Broncos on the road next Saturday night.
