Jordan Stolz emerged as the breakout star of these Games while Madison Chock and Evan Bates came up just short of gold
Day 5 at the 2026 Winter Olympics concluded with heartbreak on the ice. Madison Chock and Evan Bates delivered a season-best free skate in the ice dance final, but it wasn’t enough to capture the elusive Olympic gold. The American duo finished just 1.43 points behind France’s Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron, settling for silver after two razor-close programs in Milan.
Jordan Stolz delivered one of the defining performances of the Games so far in the men’s 1000 meters, setting an Olympic speedskating record in 1:06.28 to claim gold. Skating head-to-head with Dutch rival Jenning de Boo, Stolz trailed early before unleashing a dominant closing lap to win by half a second. The 21-year-old entered Milan as the world’s top speedskater and with three events still ahead — the 500m, 1500m and mass start — he has positioned himself as a potential multi-gold threat.
In snowboarding, Chloe Kim looked every bit like the reigning champion despite limited preparation following a recent shoulder injury. Kim posted the top score in women’s halfpipe qualifying with a 90.25, punctuated by a smooth 1080, as she chases a record third consecutive Olympic gold. Teammate Maddie Mastro also advanced comfortably to the final.
Team USA added two medals in women’s moguls, where Liz Lemley captured gold and Jaelin Kauf secured silver. After a stumble from the event’s top contender opened the door, the Americans capitalized with clean, composed runs to take the top two spots on the podium.
Earlier in the day, Ryan Cochran-Siegle earned silver in the men’s Super G, delivering a strong, controlled run that held the lead until Switzerland’s Franjo von Allmen bested him late.

NHL players made their official return to the Winter Olympics on Wednesday with Slovakia upsetting medal contender Finland, 4-1, in Group B. Later on, Sweden pulled away late and topped host country Italy 5-2. Team USA begins its quest for gold against Latvia on Thursday in Group C preliminary action.
Here’s a look back at everything Team USA accomplished on Wednesday, with all the key results and highlights from another day of competition.
🥈Madison Chock and Evan Bates come up just short of gold in ice dancing free skate
The two teams came into the free skate with nearly identical scores, with the French just ahead after the short program. With a sizable gap to the third-place team, it came down to the final two routines of the night in Milan, and both delivered stunning performances, with the French pair winning gold by a difference of 1.43 points.
Chock and Bates have accomplished everything in the world of ice dancing outside of winning Olympic gold and came in determined to finally capture that elusive gold medal in Milan, but the newly formed French powerhouse team edged them out on both nights of the competition to leave them with a hard-fought silver medal.

Stolz and de Boo were paired together in the penultimate race of the night, and de Boo got off to a blistering start to take the lead, but Stolz — who also races the 500m and 1500m — showed off his incredible endurance by not only closing down de Boo but flying by him on the final lap to win by a half second.
After getting his first taste of Olympic competition at 17 years old in Beijing, Stolz has emerged as the most dominant male speedskater in the world and entered the 2026 Winter Olympics with incredibly high expectations. While he still has three more races to go — the 500m, 1500m and mass start — he’s off to a flying start with a gold medal in the 1000, putting down the latest Olympic record on what’s been fast ice in Milan.
Chloe Kim topped women’s halfpipe qualifying with a 90.25 in quest for third straight gold
We got an emphatic answer of “no” to that question on Wednesday, as Kim put down the top score in qualifying for the halfpipe competition with a 90.25 on an incredibly clean run that featured a 1080 that she put down to perfection.
Team USA teammate Maddie Mastro finished third in qualifying with an 86.00, but the biggest story of qualifying was the scary crash suffered by China’s Liu Jiayu, the 2018 silver medalist, who had to be stretchered off the course. That crash left Kim and other competitors shaken seeing a top competitor and friend of many, including Kim, go down.
The women’s halfpipe final will take place on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. ET, where Kim can become the first snowboarder in history to win gold at three straight Olympics on either the men’s or women’s side.
🥈American Ryan Cochran-Siegle wins silver in the men’s Super G
A clean run from Cochran-Siegle put him in first for most of the competition before he was finally unseated by Swiss superstar Franjo von Allmen, who topped Cochran-Siegle’s time to win his third gold of this year’s games (downhill and team combined), becoming the first man to collect three golds at one Olympics since 1968.
