Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders went to bat Tuesday for the coach he faces Saturday night, defending Arizona State Sun Devils coach Kenny Dillingham against the voices questioning him one season after Dillingham was the Big 12 Coach of the Year.

“He’s my guy,” Sanders said. “We came in the same class. I read some stuff every once in a while that they’re questioning his ability — like, did he forget to coach since ’24? He was the Coach of the Year. He’s a phenomenal mind.”

Sanders said the two almost worked together once, and that he is glad it played out the way it did. He praised Dillingham’s coaching style, his delivery, his voice to his players, and his voice in the community raising money for his program.

Arizona State (4-4, 2-3 Big 12) hosts Colorado on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. on ESPN2. The Sun Devils lost 27-20 at BYU on Saturday, and Dillingham said Tuesday after practice that the football has been better for a month even as the losses have come.

“I think this is the fourth week in a row we’ve played pretty good, pretty consistent,” Dillingham said. He said the team was tired for a while and lost confidence, and that changes to practice have let the Sun Devils practice faster. He pointed to the composure of his two young backs in the backfield at BYU and said his players are getting more confident in what they are doing.

“Everybody’s upset — it’s not fun to lose a football game, that’s never the goal,” Dillingham said. “But I do think we’re playing better football.”

Sanders also ran through the rest of the Colorado week: cross country won the Big 12 championship and the women finished fourth, one point out of third; Tad Boyle’s men opened the basketball season Monday night against Abilene Christian; JR Payne’s women play Morgan State on Wednesday at the Events Center; and soccer holds senior day Thursday night against Oklahoma State at 7.
