  • Mikel Merino stars again as Spain edges Belgium 2-1 in the World Cup quarterfinals

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) Mikel Merino is Spain’s World Cup hero once again, and even he finds it hard to believe.

A mere four days after Merino scored a clutch goal as a substitute in injury time to beat Portugal, he found himself in the right spot again in the quarterfinals when Belgium’s backup goalkeeper spilled the ball into his path.

Merino booted it home in the 88th minute, sending Spain to a 2-1 victory Friday and into a titanic semifinal showdown with tournament favorite France.

“I’ve done this again, and it’s happened to me again, so it would seem that coincidence exists,” a smiling Merino said. “If you’re ready and you try, I guess it can happen for you.”

Already a versatile contributor in any role he can get as a depth player for his country or English club Arsenal, the multi-positional Merino has transformed into the ultimate super-sub while providing exactly what Spain needed to survive two knockout matches against top opponents.

Merino has scored two goals in his first World Cup – and they’re both historic.

“Honestly, it’s crazy to be able to help the team once again,” he said. “This time in a different way, but at the same time to believe and trust that the opposing goalkeeper could make a mistake and to stay alert. … I prepare for when the moment comes, and hopefully they keep coming.”

Merino is the first to admit he also needed luck, and Belgium keeper Senne Lammens provided it after he was forced into his first World Cup match in the 71st minute by an injury to starter Thibaut Courtois.

Merino came on in the 86th minute and scored on his second touch of the match, charging into the box and pouncing after Lammens lost control of Pau Cubarsí’s long shot.

Fabián Ruiz scored a rebound goal in the 30th minute for Spain, but Belgium forward Charles De Ketelaere evened it with the first goal allowed by the Spanish team in the entire World Cup in the 41st minute.

Merino’s clutch goal against an upset-minded Belgium sent La Roja to the semifinals for the first time since they won the World Cup in 2010. A powerhouse matchup with France has been anticipated since the draw was announced late last year, and Spain was grateful to secure its spot.

“We came here for this, to play against the best teams in the world,” Merino said. “We are confident in our possibilities, at the same time respecting the opposition. This is one of those games that you dream of when you’re a kid, and now we have the chance to compete against a massive rival. Hopefully we’ll get the win.”

Spain and France will meet Tuesday in Arlington, Texas, in a matchup anticipated for years. Neither team has lost at this year’s World Cup.

“It will be a clash of giants,” Spain coach Luis De La Fuente said through a translator. “We are capable of winning this game – and not just now, but I would have said this a few weeks ago as well. They are a great giant of football, but I trust our team.”

Courtois made four saves, but the Real Madrid keeper went down to the grass in the second half after a long kick. He received treatment during the hydration break, but broke down in tears when coach Rudi Garcia removed him moments later.

Only Germany’s Manuel Neuer has played more World Cup matches than Courtois’ 21. Lammens, the capable Manchester United keeper, was forced to become the first goalkeeper other than Courtois to play for Belgium in the last four World Cup tournaments – and he wasn’t able to make the play that would have kept it level.

“We were on equal footing with Spain, and we have nothing to feel bad about,” Garcia said. “In the first half, they only had one chance, but they were very efficient. Unfortunately, to beat a team of this caliber, you need luck on your side as well, and it was too much for us to get into the semifinals.”

Belgium desperately pressed for an equalizer in the final minutes with substitute forward Romelu Lukaku leading the effort, but Aymeric Laporte acrobatically volleyed the best chance out of the box in the second minute of injury time.

“We knew how we could hurt them, and I think we did this today,” Belgium defender Brandon Mechele said. “It’s a pity that it ended like this, but I think we can be proud of the tournament we played.”

Spain remained unbeaten in 37 straight competitive matches since March 2023, while Belgium’s streak of 18 consecutive unbeaten matches across all competitions ended.

Spain didn’t allow a goal in its first five matches at this year’s tournament, and goalkeeper Unai Simón hadn’t conceded in a World Cup-record 650 minutes dating to Qatar.

The streaks abruptly ended when De Ketelaere muscled past Cubarsí and headed home a cross from Timothy Castagne for Belgium’s tying goal.

Belgium hadn’t generated anything close to a strong scoring chance before the latest big moment for De Ketelaere, the Atalanta forward who scored two goals in Belgium’s 4-1 rout of the co-host U.S. on Monday.

Belgium captain Youri Tielemans was removed from the starting lineup after getting injured during warmups. He joined injured defender Amadou Onana on the sidelines.

  • Kelsey Mitchell scores 29 points, Fever hold on to beat Mercury 92-89 from Thursday

PHOENIX (AP) Kelsey Mitchell hit a layup with 10.1 seconds left to finish with 29 points and the Indiana Fever held on for a 92-89 win over the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday night.

The teams put two testy games in Indianapolis last month behind them, trading baskets instead of bumps and barbs.

Mitchell put Indiana (13-9) up 90-89 with her layup and Sophie Cunningham added two free throws to secure the win with Caitlin Clark on the bench in street clothes.

Aliyah Boston had 21 points after being held out of a 106-92 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday night.

Alyssa Thomas and Kahleah Copper had 22 points each to lead the Mercury (8-15).

Clark didn’t play in the back-to-back to rest a lingering back injury, costing her a chance to play against the Mercury for the first time since an altercation with Thomas triggered a firestorm of opinions about the rising WNBA star.

Thomas received a one-game suspension for landing fist-down on Clark’s neck during the June 24 game, leading to death threats and racial slurs on social media. That came two days after Cunningham, who played six seasons in Phoenix, had a lengthy finger-pointing episode with DeWanna Bonner.

The teams’ third meeting had no throat punches or finger pointing, only good shooting.

Indiana shot 6 of 10 from 3-point range to lead by four in the first quarter. Phoenix shot 21 of 38 overall and 8 of 14 from 3 to lead 53-47 at halftime.

Phoenix quickly stretched the lead to 10 in the third quarter, but Indiana went on a 13-0 run to go up 62-59 before the teams traded runs in the fourth.

Fever: At Las Vegas on Sunday.

Mercury: At Las Vegas on Saturday.

  • Diamondbacks shake off Ohtani’s leadoff homer to rout the Dodgers 9-3

LOS ANGELES (AP) Eduardo Rodríguez shook off Shohei Ohtani’s leadoff homer to throw six solid innings, Tim Tawa homered and drove in four runs and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-3 on Friday night.

Rodríguez (8-3) didn’t allow another run after giving up back-to-back homers to Ohtani and Andy Pages to start the game.

Gabriel Moreno had two RBIs to help Arizona to its first win at Dodger Stadium in four tries this season.

Ohtani had been scheduled to pitch, but the Dodgers went with a bullpen game instead as the Japanese two-way star has been dealing with left knee inflammation for at least a month. Ohtani will have his left knee drained on Sunday, and the procedure will force him to miss next week’s All-Star Game in Philadelphia, but Ohtani will continue to start at designated hitter for the three-game series against the Diamondbacks.

Ohtani cracked a 381-foot homer to left center on the third pitch he saw. It was his eighth leadoff homer, tying Nationals slugger James Wood for the National League lead.

Arizona took control when Tawa hit his second homer of the season off a fastball in the fourth inning before adding two more runs in each of the next two frames.

Diamondbacks center fielder Ryan Waldschmidt left in the sixth inning with a right thumb contusion after being hit on the hand by a pitch trying to lay down a bunt, manager Torey Lovullo said. X-rays came back negative for Waldschmidt, Arizona’s top prospect who had been recalled from Triple-A Reno earlier Friday.

Will Klein (3-4) took the loss, one of seven Dodgers pitchers used.

Arizona RHP Brandon Pfaadt (2-1, 4.84 ERA) was set to oppose Dodgers RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (9-5, 2.49) on Saturday night.

Eduardo Rodriguez has pitched very well for the D-Backs this season but will face the leagues best lineup on the road in LA. Rodriguez looks like a significant regression candidate to me after viewing his underlying stats. I believe he’ll struggle going 6 innings tonight against the leagues toughest lineup.

    • Diamondbacks’ Nolan Arenado: Pops homer in win

Arenado went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday’s 3-1 win over the Padres.

Arenado provided the last run of the game when he took Yuki Matsui deep in the sixth inning. This was Arenado’s third homer in his last nine games, though he’s also struck out 11 times in that span while batting .294 (10-for-34). Overall, the third baseman is batting .243 with a .718 OPS, 11 homers, 38 RBI, 40 runs scored, 16 doubles and three stolen bases over 87 contests.

    • Diamondbacks’ Ryan Waldschmidt: Called up from Reno

The Diamondbacks recalled Waldschmidt from Triple-A Reno, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Waldschmidt will make his return to the big leagues after being optioned on June 15. In his last 15 games in Triple-A, the 23-year-old slugged just .192/.250/.269 with no homers and just one RBI. With Jordan Lawlar (hamstring) on the 10-day IL and likely facing a 4-6 week absence, Waldschmidt will see a ton of action in center field. In order to make room on the active roster for Waldschmidt, Arizona DFA’d Pavin Smith.

    • Diamondbacks’ Paul Sewald: Converts 21st save

Sewald struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the save in Thursday’s 3-1 win over the Padres.

Sewald had allowed at least one baserunners in each of his previous seven outings, but he created no drama in converting his 21st save of the year. The veteran reliever has earned seven of those saves since the start of June, but he’s also allowed seven runs over 11.2 innings in that span. For the season, he has a 4.36 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 37:8 K:BB across 33 innings.

    • Diamondbacks’ Merrill Kelly: Spins quality start

Kelly (7-8) allowed one run on three hits and three walks while striking out six over seven innings to earn the win over the Padres on Thursday.

Kelly turned in a quality start in this outing, allowing just a solo home run to Manny Machado in the second inning. This was Kelly’s second win in a row, and he heads into the All-Star break having allowed just three runs over his last 12 innings. Overall, he’s still at a 5.38 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 59:38 K:BB through 93.2 innings over 16 starts this season. He’s also given up 20 homers, putting him on pace to allow a career high in long balls — his worst campaign in that regard was 2019, when he gave up 29 homers.

  • Kylian Mbappe downplays ankle injury after France secure World Cup semifinal spot: ‘Everything is OK

    Getty Images

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The 2026 World Cup has been too magnificent and too star-loaded to lose one of the supernovas that have turned this summer’s event into arguably the best in its 96-year history.

And, thankfully, it seems we will not.

But we did get a brief flash of uncertainty about Kylian Mbappé on Thursday, an ankle issue that delivered the only drama surrounding France’s 2-0 quarterfinal win over Morocco.

The end result was the expected outcome, and it came in a game that lacked the typical pizzazz that’s adorned every other French victory in their previous five wins across the past month. The scare came in the 77th minute, after Les Bleus had gone up by two scores, when Mbappé went to the ground. The sight was strange: With 75:30 showing on the game clock, arguably the best soccer player in the world raised his right arm, tucked down, gently rolled his back onto the grass and then asked to be subbed out.

Moments later, cameras caught Mbappé sitting with his right foot/ankle wrapped with an ice pack.

    Uh-oh?

    Not exactly.

But in that moment, the game’s score and France’s impending win became a secondary plot point to the health of a global superstar; this is not a position we’re accustomed to seeing Mbappé in. France has the deepest team in this World Cup, but still, its best player isn’t prone to depart the pitch in a pivotal match against a top-10 opponent. Remember just a few days ago, when Argentina pulled off an all-time escape against Egypt? For as great as France is — and it sure seems like the greatest in maybe the most loaded World Cup field ever — nothing is guaranteed this deep into the tournament. Mbappé subbing out against a Moroccan team that hadn’t lost in more than two years was head-turning, even if the injury didn’t look bad.

He calmly walked off and 20 minutes later France had repeated the 2022 World Cup semifinal outcome against Morocco: 2-0. Mbappé milled about the field for a few minutes postgame, embracing his teammates and acknowledging some of the Moroccans.

“I’m all good. I got a knock on the ankle, but it’s all good. JP [Mateta] was more able than me to play the last 15 minutes,” Mbappé said after the game, per ESPN.

There will probably be some speculation in the coming days — as France prepares to play the winner of Spain-Belgium in Tuesday’s semifinal in Dallas — about whether he’s going to be 100%. But Mbappé immediately shut down speculation when he was interviewed on the field postgame.

“I’m fine, I took a knock to the ankle but everything is OK,” he said.

In the mixed-zone availability after the match, Mbappé spoke for more than five minutes and took six questions without raising any additional alarm bells.

His coach, Didier Deschamps, also said Mbappé “had a bit of pain in his ankle” in his on-field postgame TV interview. But the expectation, less than five days out from the start of the semifinals, is he’ll be good to go.

Until we see him on the pitch Tuesday, is there at least a little bit of suspense here? Are we looking for any reason to doubt what’s clearly been the best team at this World Cup? If nothing else, Mbappé’s injury question brings an added element of drama to the tournament that’s been overloaded with stars and storylines and reliability all around.

We don’t know yet for sure what caused the ankle problem, but Noussair Mazraoui’s yellow-card foul on Mbappé in the 25th minute had to have played a part. (Mbappé, shockingly, missed the ensuing PK.)

With this World Cup on American soil, I think we’re all hoping to get the most out of this experience possible. That means the biggest stars continuing to do what they do. That means Mbappé on the pitch as much as possible, though I’d offer up another viewpoint on what happened here: Mbappé felt the game was in hand. He knows his teammates are more than good enough. Morocco didn’t have the legs, let alone the hearts to take it. Thursday’s affair was blatantly one-sided: France had a 22-5 shot edge on Morocco, including 8-1 that were properly targeted on goal. The expected goal totals were 3.05 to 0.14, a result so lopsided, the fact that 0.79 came from a penalty hardly seems to matter. They didn’t need their best to close this out.

Morocco has still never beaten France.

So, Mbappé got dinged up and wanted to allow for an additional sub. He could rest up and avoid any further potential to get hurt. Just get ready for Spain or Belgium. That seems like the smart play. By that point in the game Mbappé had reminded the world again, as he’s done every game, that he’s the most reliable goal-scorer and playmaker the beautiful game has.

After blowing two chances with misses and getting stoned on a penalty kick, Mbappé broke the 0-0 tie in the 60th minute with a flirtatious drive into the bottom right corner of the net. He had the ball on his foot, in some traffic, just inside the keeper’s box, for all of a second. A little daylight was all he needed to bend the ball past Issa Diop and curl it beyond the outstretched arms of Moroccan keeper Yassine Bounou.

Shy of flanking half the opposing team with bogeys on him all game long, there’s no keeping Mbappé from getting one of his shots to tickle twine. Mbappé now sits one goal behind Lionel Messi for most World Cup goals ever (21 to 20). (He’s done this in 20 games. A laughable one-goal-per-game average at the age of 27.)

Six minutes later, Mbappé set up teammate Ousmane Dembele for the game’s second goal, giving Mbappé 11 combined goals and assists, which leads all players in this World Cup.

And here is France in a third straight World Cup semifinal, joining Brazil and Germany as the only countries to do that. The team hasn’t lost a competitive match in a year’s time. It’s been the best watch of this World Cup and at the center of it is Mbappé, who’s crossed over into a superstar in the United States.

If anyone is beating France, they’re going to have to do it while neutralizing No. 10. The damndest thing about this team, though, is that they may not even need him fully healthy to win two more games and pull off one of the most dominant World Cup struts ever.
