There were some thrilling finishes on the grass courts in London on Tuesday
The quarterfinals of Wimbledon got underway on Tuesday in both the men’s and women’s draws, where four players punched their tickets to the semifinals.
In the women’s draw, No. 7 seed Coco Gauff continued her career-best effort on the grass with another comeback victory, this time against No. 4 seed and fellow American, Jessica Pegula. Gauff dropped the first set as her serving woes continued, but was able to dig in as the match wore on, finding her serve and wearing down Pegula to ultimately cruise to a three-set win (4-6, 6-3, 6-3). Gauff will make her first trip to the Wimbledon semifinals where she will face No. 10 seed Karolina Muchova after Muchova dispatched of No. 14 seed Naomi Osaka in straight sets (7-6, 6-4).
On the men’s side, No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev returned to Centre Court and was able to finish off No. 13 seed Jiri Lehecka in four sets (6-4, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6) in the final Round of 16 match after it was postponed due to curfew on Monday night. In quarterfinal action, No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner cruised in straight sets over Jan-Lennard Struff (7-5, 7-6, 6-3) to continue his title defense. The marquee matchup closed out the night with No. 7 seed Novak Djokovic punching his ticket to another Wimbledon semifinal with a five-set win over No. 3 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime (7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6).
The final four spots in the semifinals of both draws will be settled on Wednesday. In the women’s draw, No. 12 seed Marta Kostyuk will face No. 13 seed Jasmine Paolini, while No. 9 seed Linda Noskova faces No. 25 seed Elise Mertens. In men’s action, Zverev will take on No. 6 seed Taylor Fritz, as he looks to keep the dream alive of becoming the first American grand slam champion since 2003, and British wild card entry (and fan favorite in London) Arthur Fery looks to continue his Cinderella run against No. 9 seed Flavio Cobolli.
