Walston (elbow) struck out two and allowed one hit in a scoreless inning during a rehab appearance Wednesday with Triple-A Reno.

Walston had been a full-time starter throughout his minor-league career and started in two of his seven appearances during his debut season with the Diamondbacks in 2024 before undergoing Tommy John surgery last spring. While the Diamondbacks may not have closed the door on developing the 25-year-old as a starter, it appears he’ll be preparing for a multi-inning relief role for the remainder of the season once he returns from the 60-day injured list. He’s been used out of the bullpen for each of his first three rehab appearances with Reno, covering four innings while striking out three and allowing one unearned run on two hits and no walks.

Thompson (back) began a throwing program Monday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Arizona placed Thompson on the 15-day injured list Aug. 5, so his ability to start throwing soon after being deactivated suggests that he won’t be in line for an extended stay on the shelf. Thompson had collected seven holds and four wins while pitching to a 4.43 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 40.2 innings over 46 appearances out of the Arizona bullpen prior to landing on the IL.

Perdomo went 2-for-6 with a run scored in Wednesday’s 6-4 loss to the Rockies.

Perdomo was back at shortstop and led off for the Diamondbacks after missing one game due to a knee issue. The multi-hit effort was his sixth in the last 12 contests, during which Perdomo is 18-for-48 (.375) with four extra-base hits (one home run), five RBI and six runs scored.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Lawlar (hamstring) could return from the 10-day injured list during their upcoming road trip that begins Friday in Atlanta, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Lawlar completed the seventh game of his rehab assignment with Double-A Amarillo on Wednesday, playing nine innings in center field while going 1-for-5 with a solo home run. He’s now played nine-inning games on consecutive days, which is typically a sign of a player nearing activation. After the trip to Atlanta on Friday, the Diamondbacks move on to Boston for a three-game set beginning Monday.
