PHOENIX — With Mark Williams sidelined long-term, an unexpected name is climbing the Phoenix Suns’ depth chart: training-camp invite Duop Reath.
Reath has emerged as the Suns’ third big man behind Oso Ighodaro and Khaman Maluach, bringing something neither of them offers — legitimate 3-point range from the center spot. Head coach Jordan Ott has taken notice of the floor-spacing the veteran big provides as the Suns sort out their frontcourt rotation.
The 6-foot-11 Reath is fighting for a roster spot, and his shooting has given Phoenix a different look at the five — a pick-and-pop option that opens driving lanes for Devin Booker and company.
In injury news, guard Luke Kennard — who left Tuesday’s preseason game in San Antonio with a sore left knee — is being re-evaluated back in Phoenix. The Suns have not announced a timeline for his return.
Phoenix closes the preseason Friday at home against the Utah Jazz, the final tune-up before the regular season.
