Saira Banu marked the birthday of Hema Malini — the Bollywood legend known as the “Dream Girl,” one of Indian cinema’s most beloved stars — with a heartfelt note full of memories: a shattered glass door, a mahurat shot with Dharmendra and Shashi Kapoor, and a tender reflection on a love story decades in the making.
Malini was married to Dharmendra, the iconic Bollywood leading man, and the two shared one of Indian cinema’s great romances — a love that lasted for decades, on screen and off.
“Hema has always been wonderfully vivacious in the company of friends,” Saira wrote as it appeared in the Indian Entertainment site “Bollywood Hungama as she tells the story.” She recalled Hema visiting her home with an uncle who failed to notice a large transparent glass door and walked straight into it, bringing the whole thing crashing down. While everyone was alarmed, Hema broke into such uncontrollable laughter that soon everyone was laughing along with her.
Another treasured memory: a mahurat shot for Ramanand Sagar, with Hema, Dharmendra,
Shashi Kapoor and Saira together. “Hema was teasing Shashi with her usual mischief, and even as the camera was ready to roll, we simply couldn’t stop laughing,” Saira wrote. “That was Hema, full of life, laughter and delightful spontaneity.”
“Behind the magnificent artiste, the graceful dancer and the Dream Girl adored by millions, I have always known a warm, affectionate and wonderfully playful woman.”
Saira also reflected on Dharmendra, acknowledging this birthday might feel different for her friend: “I find myself thinking of Dharam ji too, who was such an inseparable part of so many beautiful moments in your life. I know this birthday will feel different, but the love and memories of a lifetime have a beautiful way of staying with us.”
